The Gescræft
The Gescræft is a metaphysical plane of pure energy that manifests in all other planes of existence and is the primary source of all magical energy. The Gescræft is not benevolent nor malevolent, but simply is. It cannot be changed or altered, but it is often manifested and harnessed by those capable of doing so to produce magical power and ability. It exists around all things, and holds miracles and horrors incomprehensible to mortal understanding.
The thin membrane that separates the Gescræft from all other planes of existence is known as the Vallum. It allows for the passage of energy between planes, which permits magic users to harness the essential and boundless energies they require to perform their abilities.
While the Vallum is not fragile by any means, it can be ripped open by those who posses great power and understanding of both the Vallum and the Gescræft itself. This has occurred within living memory in an event known as the War of the Planes, which resulted in a near-apocalyptic event that had the potential to destroy Ethel and all who lived within it.

Harnessing and unleashing Gescræft energy within the mortal plane can be extremely beneficial to its wielders, but can be just as dangerous as well. Gescræft wielders have developed two distinct techniques for harnessing it; pure energy and corrupt energy.Pure Energy
The use of pure energy is the most common practice of Gescræft wielding in Ethel. Pure energy wielding harbors very little if any danger to the user due to the generally passive energy of its source. It includes magic such as healing, light, and various manifestations of elemental energy.
Pure energy is percieved fondly by those who accept the use of Gescræft energy in general, although some religious groups believe that the use of any form of Gescræft energy is sacrilegous and should only be reserved for celestial beings. Celestial beings generally tap into this enegy source to exert their power and will upon Ethel. However, many pure energy users take on beneficial professions across the world and provide valuable services to its people.

Evil and dark entities lurk within the Gescræft awaiting vessels to exert their influence upon, and the extended use of corrupt energy can serve as a beacon for these entities to follow and slowly infect the mind of the user. As a result, numerous powerful Gescræft wielders have succumbed to these entities and become thralls for their devastating will.
