Honey
Honey is a natural sugar that is produced by bees and can be harvested from their nests. People either gather honey themselves or can purchase it from beekeepers who typically harvest the honey from domesticated bee colonies.
History & Usage
Everyday use
Honey is commonly used to sweeten food items and drinks. It is also used by herbalists for wound treatment, cough relief, and to some extent as a topical antibiotic.
Refinement
Raw honey can be used as is but is often refined through various processes to remove particulate material and yeast. Examples of those processes are straining, filtration, heating, and creaming.
Hazards
Honey harvested from bee nests near poisonous plants can have toxic properties and therefore harm the health of the consuming person.
Environmental Impact
Overharvesting honey from a single bee nest can lead to the extinction of the nest inhabiting bee colony.
Distribution
Storage
Honey can be stored in sealable jars in a cool place, protected from moisture for multiple years. The enjoyability can last for a longer timeframe if the honey gets refined before it is transferred into a jar for storage.
