Miner

Miner is the name of a profession with many specializations or sub-professions depending on the gathered material or resources. Miners are often undervalued amongst outsiders as they mostly wear clothes with holes or stains out of rough fabrics or durable leather.

Career

Qualifications

Education is dependent on the wanted material. For example, a clay pit or stone quarry has other dangers, such as an underground mine. Most miners have done safety training with a veteran miner, but many are self-taught or learn as they do. Safety training is often required within mining towns and mining guilds.

Payment & Reimbursement

There are two types of payments for miners.
  1. They sell the materials they mine and keep the revenue.
  2. They get paid by a mining company or guild for which they work but need to hand over the mined materials.

Perception

Purpose

Miner mine after various materials ranging from clay and stone to gemstones and metals. Those materials are used to build houses (stone), manufacture vases, plates, or mugs (clay) as well as tools, weapons household items (metal), and jewelry or other luxury items (gemstone). They fulfill the role to obtain those materials and supply the society with the raw material or in some rare cases with a manufactured product.

Operations

Tools

The base tools for every kind of miner are:
  • Pickaxe
  • Shovel
  • A piece of cloth to cover the mouth and nose
Additional tools needed for cave or underground mining:
  • A light source
  • Rope
  • A color stone to mark tunnels
  • Some kind of carrying device like a bag or bucket

Dangers & Hazards

Miners are prone to several physical injuries due to their hard work. The injuries range from superficial scratches over concussions to bone fractures.   Sometimes if the miner doesn't pay attention to his safety, there are cases of oxygen depletion, which can lead to death through suffocation at worst.
