Angel Island Lazaretto

The Angel Island Lazaretto, in the San Fransisco bay, is where Sonoma shoves everyone it otherwise doesn't want to take care of. This primarily includes lepers and those with Exclusion Sickness, though it happens from time to time that a Godly soul or a pariah will choose to move there and live in charity to the colony.

The leper colony and its dock are all huddled around Ayala Cove on the North side of the island. Here, scraggly trees break the heat of the sun, and allow the colony to live in relative comfort. The rest of the island is dry and uninhabited.

Based on the island of the same name.

Although my sentencing to the colony was itself an act of cruelty, I found only welcome from the inhabitants themselves. I was free to leave my quarters as I pleased, to interact with the other 'patients' and the gentle missionaries which looked after them.

It was here that I met others like me for the first time. I learned what we are called simply the Bleak Hearted, that we are cursed by Jhoutaioan disease and magic to have our nightmares made manifest on our skin. I look at the cracked scars spreading across my face with fresh horror and newfound acceptance now, bolstered only by the hope that some of these other bleakhearted are elderly.

Perhaps I too will see old age. But not on this island. Please, not on this island. I have visited the gravesites here and I do not want my name placed among them, nor do I want it to be my howling rising from the oubliettes in the dead of night.

Features

Lazaretto

A small village surrounds the concrete remains of what was once a Ranger's compound. At one edge is a barely-used hospital with beds for quarantined sailors. There is a building each for Lepers, BleakHearts, and the missionaries who care for them.

Ione Lookout

Strobes on this lookout guide night ferries through the strait. Unfortunately, these strobes also attract the wild Tonagra from across the strait.

A vigilant lookout with a rifle is mandatory.

Ferry Dock

Everything the colony needs to survive arrives through this dock once a week, where it is meticulously inventoried and stored in connected root cellars.

Broadcast Tower

Constructed 170m above sea level atop Mt. Livermore, with a good view of the steel bones of the old San Francisco skyline to the south—like the swords of an army of giants rising from the sea.

Oubliettes

Constructed from the remains of Fort Mcdowell, this is the unfortunate destination for many BleakHeart whose mutations are more than the colony can handle.

Graveyard

The patients who die on Angel Island are buried here, graves marked with rough hewn stones whose epitaphs have already begun to erode.

What a desperately sad place. I am glad there is welcome there for those that need it.

If it helps, it'll be one of the more peaceful parts of her life, ultimately. It's where she makes peace with her ailment, and finds a new purpose and drive. Despite the pains within its borders, the people there mostly look out for each other.

Gravestones really got me, to be forced to live there is one thing, but being buried there feels like the shittier equivalent of boot hill. Oof.
