Kappa Dragon
Summercamp Prompt: A species with an unusual form of communication
Kappa Dragons are peaceful amphibious Dragons engineered to survive in the toxic waters beyond the lagoon of the Strashya Atoll. They use their hollow, chalice-shaped shell to store freshwater from the lagoon, in much the way a camel stores water in their humps. This behavior allows them to take long oceanic trips without running out of water.
Kappa dragons are a keystone species of the Strasyan ecosystem. For sustenance, they eat the wetland crustaceans which might otherwise spread too far into the lagoon and harm the Filterfruit Kelp growing there. To aid in digestion, they eat the Polyp-rich bark of many of the local Plaque Corals which grow along the coast. They then excrete fertilizer and sand which is beneficial to the continued growth of many parts of the ecosystem.
Social Groups
Kappa Dragons swim in small familial pods of 2-5, with mating pairs swimming together for life. They cultivate communal kelp beds for sleeping in, typically along the edges of wetlands where they can prey on the small crustaceans living along its silty borders.
Odd Communication
Although they are meant to communicate through nonverbal or tactile means, the Kappa population has adopted a behavior of rapid and loud beak clicking. What these clicks mean, or how they are interpreted by other Kappa, is a mystery.
Natural Fertilizer
Due to their engrained habit of chewing on the local stonecoral, Kappa dragons defecate sand, fertilize nitrates, and coral polyps within and around the Atoll, helping seed the growth of fresh stonecoral.
