Aurorae
WIP - Summer Camp 2023
In both the far north and far south of Etrea, there are brighly coloured light displays in the night sky several times a year. The lights are mostly blue and green, but rarely red, purple, and orange lights also occur. They look like streaks of colour in the dark sky, slowly undulating and shimmering until they fade away.
Known as aurorae, they are theorised by scholars to be caused by geomagnetic storms and solar winds, the particles interacting with the atmosphere of Etrea and burning up. Different elements cause different colours. It can never really be predicted when these displays will occur, but on some nights the aurorae light up the sky enough that it is almost like day. (Need to do more research.)
On very rare occasions, like once every thousand years, these displays are visible all over the world. Etrea is overdue one of these. They are known as aurora storms.
They are known by many other names, with different myths and legends across different cultures as to the origin of these lights. In most cultures, the aurorae are seen as a good omen or a blessing, and people look forward to the next time the skies are graced by the lights. In a select few cultures, however, the lights are a symbol of something much more sinister.
Some examples for now:
Ilwyrika - They are known as the Wandering Lights. They are believed to bring good luck to travellers.
Koye - They are believed to be a glimpse into the afterlife. It is wise to stay inside on nights where the lights are shining.
Escilar - The aurora are believed to be the flowing robes of their god of the sky.
Fluvansii - Colours are associated with divinity. The aurora are divine.
Stemor - They believe that the aurora are the trailing hair ribbons of their goddess of the night.
