Egg-Laying Shapeshifters

A myth borne out of ignorance

It is a commonly held belief amongst humans that shapeshifters lay eggs to reproduce, especially those that can transform into a type of bird. The Royal Arcanum in Kaien claims to have one in their collection, though many scholars are sceptical of its authenticity.   This myth does not tend to survive in larger settlements, which tend to have a much more diverse population, and most humans who spend some amount of time around shapeshifters would come to the conclusion that the notion is ridiculous. However, avian shapeshifters are particularly isolationist, even amongst their own species, with the majority of them living in the mountainside city of Teht Krekahw. This leads to the rumours of egg-laying persisting on every continent on Etrea.   In general, Shapeshifters find the myth rather amusing, in part because the concept is absurd to them. Avian shapeshifters, though, are more likely to take offense, especially those of the Kawhai, because to them it is the same as being compared to or equated with animals.

I'm curious about the origins of the "shapeshifter egg" in the Royal Arcanum lol

Surely there is an interesting story behind this urban myth? I like how you touched on how the avian shape shifters feel about the myth. Perhaps this is also what has led to them living a more reclusive life?

Yeah, it's definitely contributes to their view of outsiders, for sure. I reckon different (human) cultures have a few stories that lead this myth, for sure. Thank you!

I want to read about a heist by avian shapeshifters to steal/destroy the so-called "shapeshifter egg" out of spite.

That would be a fun adventure. :D

This does a really good job at encapsulates how even really out there urban legends / myths can seem perfectly sensible to a particular isolated group, but quickly crumbles when exposed to outside examination. It was a nice and amusing read, and... I'm kind of curious about that one so-claimed 'authentic shapeshifter egg'.

Thank you! :D   I like that little detail, of what happens when scientists are looking for evidence to back up their ideas rather than the other way around. I'm pretty sure it's either a fossilised bird egg or just a pleasingly-shaped rock. :D
