The Gulguns

The shifting mountains

The Gulgans are a volcanic mountain range on the continent of Sarsand, located along an active fault line between the east and west Sarsandic continental plates. With the plates forever grinding against each other, the region is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity. Local myths and legends talk of mountains appearing or disappearing almost overnight.   Generally the earthquakes and eruptions cause little structural damage to the surrounding areas and settlements not nestled in the mountains themselves. Larger disasters do happen, however, with an average frequency of at least once a century. The most recent eruption in the Gulgans occurred calendar ago, when the entire side of the volcano known as Mount Vatra exploded, destroying miles of land to the east and wiping out Moragul's capital city of Vos Aren.
The foothills of the Gulgans are highly fertile, covered with rich volcanic soil, which draws people to live there in spite of the risk of eruptions. Many buildings in the area are built cheaply, with an emphasis on being quick to rebuild rather than to survive a disaster.
