Located near the centre of the city of
Malashta, the Ma'ris Theatre is one of the most celebrated cultural icons in the country of
Lura. It is a large circular space built from
stone and
wood, consisting of two stages - one outdoors, and one indoors. The stages are semi-circle in shape, and the audience seating is tiered around it in a half round. Patronage to the theatre is expensive, and therefore is almost exclusively the realm of the upper class.
One of the most famous performances at the theatre is a form of
talahs'in, a
Luran cultural tradition involving elongated animal masks, copious amounts of fabric, and dance. Whilst normally loud and joyful, performances of talahs'in in the Ma'ris are usually set to the backdrop of silence with the occasional drum beat or plucked string. Many call this art.
The theatre also hosts plays of both the comic and tragic persuasion, as well as dramatisations of historical events - with an often obvious political slant.
Once a year, during the festival of the
First Moon, the Ma'ris hosts a free performance in its outdoor amphitheatre, allowing those of other social classes to attend. These performances are usually suitable for children, and involve music, dancing, and bright colours. The theatre is closed for several days afterwards for cleaning.
Talahs'in seems like it would be incredibly entrancing to watch and experience.
It really does. I find it a little terrifying, but that's the masks hahaha. Thanks for the comment! :)
