Notes On Entities that Worship Non-divine Entities
Note that cultists and other such individuals may also worship these entities as well as the races listed below.
Bugbears
These beings worship a figure known as Hruggek. This was an ancient Bugbear warrior who legend says slew 10 000 foes alone but died in the process. They believe he ascended and is preparing for the Final Raid. Bugbears believe their spirits have a chance to join him to fight this battle if they prove their worth as warriors.
Bullywugs & Grungs
These beings are known to worship the Slaan. These beings are large, toad-like entities that barely move and are said to possess immense magical power. For this reason, it is usual for Bullywug kings/queens and Grung chiefs/chieftess’ to have similar appearances to these figures, as it is seen as a divine sign of their right to rule.
Elemental Peoples
These beings (Azers, Galeb Duhr, Genies, some Genasi, Magmims, Mephits, Salamanders, etc) worship the Fallen Titans. This is a small pantheon of elemental beings who ruled the world before the gods arrived. They fought a war with the Elder Gods, but lost and were slain.
Giants
All giants used to worship a deity known as Annum. It is said that he gave the sage-like storm giants a set of six tomes, that set forth tenants by which the Giants should live. These tomes where known collectively as the Word of Annum. After their ill-fated war on the gods, these tomes were lost. In the modern era, only the Storm Giants still follow these teachings; the others follow bastardized versions of the second tome, known as the Ordning.
Gnolls
These hyena-like vermin worship the demon lord Yeenoghu. This entity is the lord of slaughter and senseless carnage, and the Gnolls adhere to those principles. They carry out their deity’s will by following his omens.
Goblins
Nilbog is the entity that was once a god but was shattered into fragments by Sajatarius for seeing his true form. Nilbog is not the true name of this entity, but goblins fear if they speak his true name Sajatarius will send his avatar to finish the job. Its broken spirit can possess goblins and uses them as a host, known as a ‘Jester’, to carry out its tricks and spread malicious curses. Hobgoblins and Bugbears fear this entity, as it can cause serious damage to a war host.
Illithids
Mindflayers, even those who are not under its thrall, respect their colonies Elder Brain. This entity is massively intelligent and very dangerous and can subjugate any Illithid that comes in range of its psionic abilities.
Kuo-Toa
These insane fishes worship an entity known as Blibdoolpoolp the Sea Mother. It is believed that she appears as a humanoid woman to have the head, arms, and back plating of a crayfish. Her origins are mysterious, but some believe that she arose from the collective consciousness of the Kuo-Toa after a Kuo-Toa artisan modified a statue of a human woman to have crustacean characteristics.
Kobolds
The Kobold god was a vassal of Tiamat, who was sent to recover some of her treasure which was stolen. However, legend has it that he was imprisoned somewhere deep in the earth. For this reason, he does not answer the Kobolds’ prayers and has been gone so long that they do not remember his name. These small creatures tunnel endlessly in the hopes of recovering their god, whose name has been forgotten to time.
Lizardfolk
Semuanya is the god of the Lizardfolk. He represents the sun and is thought to appreciate the sacrifices of sentient beings in his name. This entity scribed prophecies upon the walls of the ancient hatching grounds that the Lizardfolk have adhered to since its founding. Scholars believe this was a Lizardfolk who had some divination abilities.
Merrow & Sahaugin
The cursed Merfolk (Merrow) and their brutal masters (the Sahaugin) worship Sekolah, the shark god. This entity is said to give the Sahaugin divine power over Merrow and sharks, allowing them to bend them to their will. Scholars debate the legitimacy of this entity’s existence.
Myconids & Vegepygmies
The Fungal Folk do revere their presiding Myconoid Sovereign as a deity. Although the extent of this faith is unknown, they do erect small shrines of plant and stone to its image, and Vegepygmies have been seen to take part in a prayer ritual before it.
Neogi
The spider-eels worship an empress as a demi-god. Neogi are commonly seen sacrificing slaves and building shrines in her honour. It is believed that she is the Neogi grand-master, who rules the others with an iron fist.
Thri-kreen & Tlincalli
These insectoids worship a gigantic golden scarab known as Rask. Little is known about their beliefs.
Yaun-Ti
This race of transformed humanoids has three gods: Dendar (the Night Serpent, she is the harbinger of the end-times), Merrshaulk (the Master of the Pit, even slumbering he helps the society he seeded), and Sseth (he appears as a winged Yaun-Ti that represents strategy and war). These gods are old beings, powerful, and existed in the world before the gods came and cast out the primordials. Regardless of their age, these beings are not divine.
