The Blessing of Pelor
Shyrin is a world steeped in magic and arcane energies, bestowed upon it by Pelor. It is thought that the god created the reservoir of magical power and granted several creatures the ability to use this energy to manipulate reality. Scholars believe that the Sea of Arcanum is slowly depleted as creatures use it, and that Pelor replenishes it every day with his passing.
Research has shown that only one in a thousand has the ability to interact with magic. This estimate does have slight variations between species, with the rate being higher among elves and humans, and lower in goblinoids; however, the differences are small. Scholars believe that Pelor blesses children after conception, gifting them arcane capabilities.
One's arcane capabilities begin to manifest during early-childhood, around the ages of 5 to 7 in Humans. This is paired with the development of the Nexus; a thin, dark, sub-dermal organ that exists along the underside of both forearms. The exact colour and shape varies between species and individuals.
The Nexus merely grants individuals the capacity to use magic, but it is training and experience that allow individuals to draw more magic from their connection to the Sea of Arcanum. Some people are naturally adept at using the arcane and can teach themselves, but this is rare. Rarer still is powerful entities forcing a Nexus to generate in individuals after their birth and instructing them on the arcane.
Aside from the previously noted exceptions, schooling and tutelage is required for those granted magical capabilities. If they don't receive this instruction, they can become dangerous, as magic will begin to be channeled through them in unpredictable and uncontrolled ways. In these cases, a Ritual of Severance can be preformed to severe the individual’s connection to magic.
Most temples have at least one magically adept priest/priestess who can perform the ritual. It isn't a pleasant one, and is quite painful for the subject. It is also dangerous for the caster, as there can be dangerous side affects if the individual fights back; regardless of whether the subject does so consciously or not. This ritual severs the individual’s connection permanently, and only the Wish spell can undo its affects.

The Rite of Severance
3-level Abjuration
Ritual - does not require spell slot, takes 10 minutes longerCasting Time: 24 hours
Range/Area: Touch
Components: V, S, M
Materials: A ritual dagger worth 700 gp, an idol of Pelor worth 100 gp, 25 gp of ritual chalk (consumed).

The individual who is having their Nexus severed lays in the centre of the ritual circle with their limbs extended, and their Nexus facing up. The Pelor idol is set above their head. The ritual involves the removal of the Nexus using the ritual dagger. These cuts must go down to the muscle, and are extremely painful, and causes 1d4+1 slashing damage.
After the ritual, both the caster and affected individual suffer 4 levels of exhaustion. The ritual cannot be interrupted, as any interruption dissipates the ritual, and both individuals still suffer the exhaustion.
If the target fights back, a will contest ensues. 3 successes allows the affected individual to dissipate the ritual. For each failure the target incurs, they take 1d8 psychic and 1d6 radiant damage. For each failure the caster incurs, they take 1d6 psychic and 1d4 radiant damage.
