King Dural

King Dural (a.k.a. The Immortal King)

Dural was forged in the chaos of creation, an amalgamation of the nature of fire itself. Before the Plane of Fire, Dural walked the molten rock of Urithan, boiling oceans and scorching skies, and ruled over all.   His siblings came to be, the other Colossi, and divided the world into four. Dural ruled over the mountains and the volcanoes, staking his claim of the Sun itself. His rule over the smallfolk was ruthless, his early years filled with destructive wrath and chaotic behaviours as the lands bled molten lava and coughed ash into the air.   Generations of mortals passed, Dural's rage lessened. The greenest grass grew in his hills and the most fragrant of heather blossomed, before the skies settled and began to let loose the harsh cold of torrential snowfall. The smallfolk had no access to constant warmth and began dying out.   Dural, concerned for the smallfolk, tore a piece of his breast off, smouldering with cinders and primordial flame, and handed it to the people of his lands. Their gratitude for this gift of fire was given first as a fearful return and then, further down the line of smallfolk they began to place gifts at the Primordial Wake. Dural would often rest in this pool of primordial energy, and store it up to maintain his strength, as the smallfolk left him gifts of grain and venison.   Taken back by this act of generosity, that far down the smallfolks' line of heritage, Dural accepted the gifts. This tradition is still held to this day and is known as The Day of the First Flame, where the locals of the Hills of Dural place gifts of grains and meats at the doors to Dural's palace.   This act sparked a trust between the Colossus and the smallfolk, and he showed them how to control fire, utilise its potential. Little did he know of the consequences of giving primal smallfolk a destructive energy. They burned their rival's homes, razed forests, and tapped into fire's arcane energy.   Upset, Dural became reclusive. Every year, the smallfolk would come with baked goods, from their learning of utilising flame, and cooked meats, but Dural would not turn his head to them. His flame was dulled at the great terror he gifted to the smallfolk, and saw only regret when he would face them.   Generations passed, and the smallfolk became impatient with their tradition and took up arms, to face Dural in a battle. They lost, their weapons cracked against his flesh, barely scathing him. Their attempts continued to fail until one day, the smallfolk saw Dural in combat with a gargantuan winged beast, red of flesh, and breath of hellfire. They dubbed it "dragon".   This dragon scarred the Colossus, but took a near fatal blow as the city-sized fist pummelled it into the earth. It fled, Dural emerged from the Primordial Wake, victorious. The smallfolk, baffled and awestruck at the might of this giant elemental, took a knee. They dubbed Dural their king, and carved a smallfolk-sized crown for him from a fallen star.   Dural took the gift of the smallfolk and adorned it upon his head. In that moment, his form changed, shrinking down to the size of an 8ft tall human, the dark stone crown perfectly fitted to his head. His body smouldered and crackled until it settled, his flesh turning to an ashen grey.   From then on, the smallfolk had their leader, and soon built a city around the Primordial Wake, and crafted a beautiful palace on the source of Dural's power, for him to sit atop. In honour of their mighty king, they named their land The Hills of Dural.   The lands were fraught with warfare in these times, the most prolific being the civil war between Dural and Pharron, a knight who descended from those who rose against Dural centuries before. They fought a 30-year war, with Dural emerging victor, but, in Pharron's honour, Dural had a tomb made for him to protect his secrets.   After this war, a few millenia passed, and Dural was faced one last time by a being who equalled him in battle. A human by the name of Novaris, claiming to be an Emperor of Fire, wished to usurp his frost-laden lands.   The two fought face-to-face, levelling mountains, flooding planes, and rupturing the earth with their catastrophic blows. They both left the fight badly wounded, but Dural emerged victor, one last time. He became weaker, his flame dwindling, and found refuge in his palace.   There he has remained for the last 500 years, awaiting his rival's return.   Now, as the drums of war roar louder and louder, the Primordial Wake beckons the King to rise once again.   A Colossus rises to the march of war.
