Order of the Garland Knights
"Guide ye, to Dùn Nàdar, beyond the Ebonmounte, don thy garland as a hero of yore."
"RUN!" the old lumberjack cried, bolting from the woods.
A Berserker roaring, cracking the melodies of songbirds in the forest air, shattering through branches as the beast lunges for the frail man's legs. You run, as fast as your legs carry you, the harrowing cries becoming ever distant before silence befalls the woods once again. Your fear still deep in your veins as the crunching of wood gets closer and closer.
Instinct carries you, your arms like a shield, protecting the upper body.
Clawing, clambering, your arms are torn from their protective wall. A scream rattles deep in your chest, the tears blasted from your cheeks by the force - a hurricane of emotion.
The storm subsides, your eyes peeling open, bloodshot and shaking. Worn armour, overgrown, torn and bloodied, a hand outstretched as the other arm carries the old lumberjack over shoulder.
The fear subsides, the muffled voice through the helm calling to you:
"It's okay now, you're all safe."
Structure
The Garland Knights are run by one unseen figure, and four seen people; three men, and one woman, known to those of the Order, as Masters. The four Masters are: Ser (Sir) Leo Garland, Baron Tiberius Fuarson, Lord Saruthel Ves'dran, and Countess Ailsa von Mulwood.
From the Inner Sanctum of Dùn Nàdar, the four Masters are given their instructions by the unseen leader, and take in any potential candidates to the Order through a strange test of character.
Public Agenda
Not much is known of the Garland Knights, their Order steeped in legends of yore, but in the shadows of the most monster-infested forests, or desecrated sanctums of Fey, they are there to quell the tides of evil. Yet, in legend, they were once almighty dragon slayers who vanquished a great evil in the Era of War, but there has been no evidence of dragons slain in tapestries or records of those times.
From their founding, they have prided themselves on protecting people from something they call "Elder Evils", of which have not shown since the Blood and Arcana Wars, and instead banish the off-spawn of the energies left behind.
Assets
The entirety of the Order own Dùn Nàdar in the mountains of Kederith, with a vast store of weapons and armour forged on site. Each member has their own steed which are reared and trained alongside each of the seventeen knights currently in training. Dùn Nàdar maintains a relatively stable income through ancient agreements with the Kederith, which donates 10% of all taxation to the mountaintop fortress, via an escorted courier.
History
Seeker Hromir, a hero of the War of the Colossus, founded the Order of the Garland Knights in secret, to protect the lands of Anderall against the dangers of latent primordial beings and other malicious beings. He founded it on three principles: duty, valour, and respect.
He wrote the values of a Garland Knight into stone in Dùn Nàdar, in what is now the Inner Sanctum, a deeply built structure in the heart of the old fortress. The first knights were trained by his truly, before he died in the climactic battle against Gorivax, the Red Death, near the end of the War of the Colossus. Remaining knights, lost, began debating amongst themselves who to appoint as their new leader, and eventually decided upon Gwe'daern, a Wood Elf who upheld the virtues the most.
Over time, the leaders became more and more aware that there was someone in the shadows pulling the strings, guiding them to the dark corners of Anderall. And, to this day, nobody has ever seen who or what they are.
