Spirit Sleep
A hallucinogenic sleep derived from the inhalation of the smoke from Sleeping Root.
Cultural Reception
Spirit Sleep is the ritual by Shamans and Witches of the Sect Of The Guardian Spirits in order to communicate with the Spirits and ancestors. They believe that the smoke signals to the Spirits that their help is needed, and the condition itself is brought on by the Spirit's powers. Some Shamans and Witches claim to be able to enter this state without the use of the root, but all require the root to learn the paths by which to reach the Spirit Realm. To those outside the Sect, the ritual is viewed as barbaric and dangerous. They believe that smoking the root clogs the mind and stains the soul.Experience
The experience of Spirits Sleep is described as an intense dream. From the moment the root begins to burn one will feel the slow onset of lethargy. one may experience a brief sting or burning in the chest and a dryness of the mouth. Most fall asleep entirely but others, especially experienced Spirit Sleepers, may stay partially aware of their body's surroundings throughout. The Spirits may stay with you at your physical location, but they may take you somewhere in this world, or to their own (usually to visit an ancestor). Often they have a message about the future or current situation of which they wish you to be aware. This message may come as a voice or in images. It may be clear or the message may be muddled or given as a riddle. It is important, no matter what is seen or heard, to stay calm and remember that no harm can come to the spirit from without. Sexual intimacy with the Spirits is uncommon but not dangerous. When the Spirits have delivered their message, one will wake in ones own body. Residual dizziness, lethargy and a dryness of the mouth are common and will fade with time.Grounding
In order to control the state of Spirit Sleep, Shamans practice the method of 'grounding'. Mastering this method allows the Shaman to return to their body at will. Grounding is usually displayed as the tapping of fingers together or on another body part. Some Shamans run their finger over tokens engraved with a swirl to remain connected to the present.
