Personal history

Born to homeless thieves on the streets of Coliftown, at some point during the winter 25 years ago.   Grew up on the streets being taught how to break into houses and steal quietly. Occasionally took jobs with the local thieves guild and got favours from them, but parents made sure we were never fully part of them.   Parents and I tried to steal from the noble house of Henewald as a team of three. Got caught and were to be executed, but a woman (Leda la Vash) snuck me out before I was killed, though she could not save my parents. We travelled for weeks over flatland and mountains to reach the Mart Duchy, specifically a town called Serrat where the leadership resided in a place called the Slakkenspire Keep.   The woman took me in and kept me hidden within the walls of Slakkenspire Keep, forbidden to show myself to anyone. She taught me how to sew secret pockets into my clothes, read and write, amongst other skills needed to serve as a courier sending secret messages.   During my lessons, an unwavering loyalty was hammered into me: Emperor first, Lord Hervisse second, Leda third. Though a point made was that I will likely never interact with the Emperor, and the Lord barely knows I exist, so Leda automatically becomes the voice of them both, commanding the highest respect.   Began exploring the secret tunnels under the castle walls, most having small peepholes into main rooms so that I can stay in touch with the news or spy on suspicious staff. One secret tunnel led to The Fool’s chamber, a secluded room with wooden toys and simple furniture. They caught me as I began to sneak out, and after a frighteningly uncharacteristic outburst of anger over the breach of privacy, we sat down and talked, though they remained glib for a long time, revealing more than sarcasm only after many visits and chats.   Later, as I became more familiar with these pathways, I was sent to spy on various children of the lord who had been brought in, when one of the sons, named Viel, accidentally happened upon an entrance to the tunnels in his room. He travelled through and found The Fool in their room hours before I could track him down in the dusty, labyrinthine passages. I found them discussing carvings, learning that Viel worked with ivory rather than wood. Curious as to how he could lower the Fool’s guard so easily, I began to talk with the lord’s son and found a common past. I even taught him halfling as a way to talk without being spied on, seeing as halflings are so rare around here.   Most recently I have been tasked with delivering a scroll to the Aburgis Lord’s bedroom in Coliftown without being noticed. I have no idea what is in the scroll, but it’s probably something about building trade agreements. I’m assuming the secrecy is to intimidate them; if they know their building can be accessed at will by the Niccoli, they are probably more inclined to accept an alliance. Whilst this is a perfect chance to take revenge, I have been forbidden from attacking any member of the Henewald family.   As it turns out, Viel is headed to Coliftown as well, with a knight and squire in tow. I will stay back and keep an eye on them all, to keep Viel safe and to see if the guards might be useful in some way.
