Sand & Sugar
Overview
Knidos is known as the land of sand and sugar. The two elements are important in many of the region's recipes and cooking methods. Several Knidos cities have a lucrative business in the cherry bean and sugar trades. The people of Knidos are famous for two recipes around these ingredients. The cherry bean is roasted in hot water, then drank with added flavorings, such as sugar. This cherry bean water is called coffee, which is a common beverage amoung the people. The beverage is drunk with a delight cube; sugary, semi-solid cube powdered and flavored with fruits, or flowers. Coffee is consumed year-around, while delight cubes only during the spring and fall seasons. This drink is exported to many continents, although it's recipe has been adapted, the original recipe is still favored and considered an art.
Two Recipes
Sand Brewing
Coffee brewing in Knidos is an art, favorite past-time and small business. The brewer nestles a tall, yet small pot into sand heated by flame, or sun, to roast powdered beans crafting the thick, delicious coffee. An expert brewer can craft various strengths of coffee, an talented brewer can make flames dance, but the artisan brewer is the dancer and their coffee merely forgotten till the end. Sand Brewing is an important tradition to the people; small carts, buildings, and individuals are decorated with artwork depicting coffee being brewed, or the brewers symbol.Delight Shapes
Stack upon towering trays and away from small hands, these white powdered cubes of sweetness sit. The main ingredient of this treat is a sap, or syrup, of plants boiled with sugar and various flavorings. The sap can be white, or yellow, colored then turn clear if boiled without flavorings. Though it's shape can change, the delight always has a powdered outside and common flavorings include rosewater, citrus, nuts, cinnamon, and many others. A simple recipe easily spread to far reaching continents into the hands of adult and child.
