Children of the Great Retreat
There was The
Folly. It became evident that it was too late for human-based intervention to slow, much less reverse, the consequences of global climate change. A series of weather disasters, pandemics, and lost human habitat were leaving the actual survival of human society in jeopardy. The decision was made that, if humankind couldn't end the crisis, they could at least do their best to cease exacerbating it and allow the planet to mend itself.
The (remaining) nations of the world signed onto the Exfil Edict and The
Great Retreat began. Utilizing newly developed
nanotechology building techniques and cannibalizing existing human-made structures as much as possible for raw materials, a series of
Megastructures were constructed. Human existence is, as much as possible, constrained to the megastructures. The megastructures themselves are as self-sufficient and self-contained as humanly possible.
There are those that do not comply as completely with the Exfil Edict (notably the
Rafters) and those who to refuse to comply at all:
Ferals.
