Ringer of the Bell

To pass the long winter nights in the capital of the country of Kuyuwiniland a competition is held to be the "Ringer of the Bell" to mark the arrival of Summer. This is designed to sow the seed of hope that the long winter season will come to an end and the summer months are on the way.   The title is a ceremonial title but comes with great perks for the recipient.   The title is open to all citizens between the age of 21 and 70 and once you have been awarded the title you may add the letters "ROTB" after your name for life. The recipient often receives other privileges such as gifts, free food and is wined and dined throughout the year.   To enter the competition the adult must first purchase a local ticket representing about 20 districts. The 20 winners are then brought to the Kuyuwiniland capital to conduct the final competition which is usually done in front of thousands of residents. The 2o districts are carefully adjusted every few years to ensure that there are about the same number of residents in each district. The perception of fairness is that important to the competition.   The final judging is done by the participants placing a wooden block into a round transparent jar, shaking the jar and allowing one stick to come out of the very narrow slot. The participant whose stick is the winner is pronounced the Ringer of the Bell for the following 12 months.   Over the 120 years of the tradition, there have been several Ringers of the Bell that have gone onto political prominence just because of the extra exposure they received by winning the completion. There have also been 2 scandals when a participant has been caught trying to fix either the local or the final competition. In both instances, the exposure was discovered before the actual final competition and the person was removed from the competition in disgust.
