Barnsdale
Barnsdale, though not a royal forest, is a wild hunting area between Doncaster and Pontefract, stretching as far west as Barnsley.
The Great North Road crosses the steep-sloped valley of the River Went at Sayliss in Barnsdale. Travellers, especially those with carts or waggons, must slow down to travel safely into or out of the valley, and the thick woods on the valley slopes make it an ideal place for robbers to ambush them.
