The Empress Matilda

Daughter of King Henry I of England and Matilda of Scotland.   In 1126 King Henry I ordered the barons of England and Normandy to swear an oath they would accept Matilda as his heir. Her younger brother, Henry's only legitimate son, William Atheling, had died in the White Ship Disaster of 1120.   In the event, Stephen of Blois ursurped the throne on Henry I's death, resulting in the civil war known as the Anarchy. Though Matilda's efforts to claim the corwn from Stephen were ultimately unsuccessful, her eldest son inherited the throne on Stephen's death and became King Henry II of England.   Mathilda became Holy Roman Empress upon her marriage to Holy Roman Emperor Henry V. Though her husband died in 1125 Matilda insisted she remain known as the Empress fo rthe rest of her life.   Matilda was Countess of Anjou from 1128 to 1151 by virtue of her marriage to Geoffrey, Count of Anjou, known as Plantagenet. Her son Henry inherited Anjou on his father's death.
