Trollers Gill
Trollers Gill is a limestone gorge in the Craven district of the West Riding of Yorkshire. It is said to be the haunt of trolls who roll rocks onto unwary travellers, and to be the home the the Barghest, a demonic black dog and harbinger of catastrophe whose gaze is said to be able to turn people to stone.
Geography
The ravine lies in limestone moorland within the Forest of Barden. It is about 1600 feet (500m) long, between 10 and 30 feet (3m to 9m) wide, and up to 60 feet (20m) deep. Its base is a rocky seasonal stream bed, usually dry but very difficult to travel in heavy rains when the beck is in spate.
Natural Resources
Lead veins are found in the gill and the surrounding area. The Augustinian Canons from Bolton Priory extract ore from some of these veins with shallow mines.
