Rowan Payne
Rowan Payne has always been a hard man: selfish, weak, angry, violent. His father, a dedicated servant of the church, always said he had wickedness tangled in his soul and that he'd spend a lifetime unraveling it, or carrying it to his death. Throughout his young adult life it was almost certain it would be the latter. He avoided responsibility, drank, got into fights. It was the love of a woman, and the death of his parents to a plague that swept the village, that caused him to rethink his life. He dedicated himself to the church in the hope for redemption.
While Rowan believes, like all believe, it's dedication to the Arunic Code that he focuses on. Through dedication to those tenets he hopes he cannot deny his baser urges, and be, if not a good man, one who does more good than ill in the world.
He has an older brother named Merek who's even more of a son of a bitch than Rowan, with no conscience or regrets. He's also better at hiding his baser nature than Rowan, both now, and while they were growing up. He left the village some years scrapes by, moving from one transient job or scheme to another. He has a younger brother named Bryce, an adult, who is a good man, like his father. He's joined some form of fighting force. Maybe he's a Gallant? Rowan feels an equal familial responsibility to both brothers, regardless of which one he may like more.
The woman who loves him is Benevolence "Ben" Wright. She sees beyond his vaguely unpleasant face and distinctly unpleasant personality to the threads of the good man beneath. She's told Rowan how she feels, and while he feels the same he lied and turned her away. He thinks she'll be better off that way.
