Dean Curieux causes The Bell relic to be activated, killing off the other two Deans and allowing the Samraaji plague to escape into the larger civilized world.

This act is driven by Dean Curieux's impatience with the slow methods of research and testing methods of past Reliquae andshe decides to "expedite" the process. The near-genocide that follows will be called the "Philippian Plague," the "Plague of the Red Tears," or Curieux's chilling title, "The First Culling."
