Faerie: Sprite

Sprites lack the warmth and compassion of their Pixie cousins. They are aggressive and cautious of strangers and will fight tooth-and-nail to protect those they are close to. However, they have an innate sense of good and evil and are drawn to those of good alignment.   Sprites are not as frivolous and merry as Pixies and they strive to put on a strong impression, determined not to allow anyone to look down on them for their size. But even the sternest of Sprites cannot pass up an opportunity to show off their intelligence and cunning, and though that does not often take the former of pranks and trickery, it means that they are always looking for a smarter strategy when they come into conflict with others.   Part of the cleverness of the Sprites manifests in their skill with poisons. They have been known to coat weapons with poison before battle or sneak it into a foe’s food or drink to avoid battle altogether. Though they do not necessarily project an image of toughness, their poisons have been known to slay foes many times their size.

They never lose their childish nature, however.   Alignment. Most Faerie Folk are good. Their minds have trouble comprehending the very idea of evil or are outright disgusted by it. They yearn to see good in everyone because it is what they understand best. They also tend toward neutral or chaotic alignments owing to their innate tendency towards trickery and practical jokes.   Size. Faeries stand between 10 and 12 inches tall and average about 2 pounds. Your size is Tiny.   Speed. Your base walking speed of 10 feet, you however very rarely walk. You have a flying speed of 30 feet and you can hover no more than 10 feet off the ground if you are more than 10 feet off the ground when you end your turn you will fall until you are within the 10 feet of the ground. Sprite wings are more akin to the wings of a dragonfly.   Hard to Hit. Your small size makes you difficult to target. You gain +1 to your AC.   Speak with Small Beasts. Through sounds and gestures, you can communicate simple ideas with Small or smaller beasts. Pixies love animals and often befriend rabbits, squirrels, mice, and small birds.   Faerie Nimbleness. You can move through the space of any creature that is of a size Medium or larger.   Speed Over Strength. Faeries are some of the smallest creatures, and their size puts a serious limit on their physical strength. You have disadvantage on all Strength and Constitution-based checks and saving throws and all Strength-based attack rolls. You can use miniature versions of any weapons that you are proficient in, but special rules apply for Strength-based attacks. Whenever you roll damage from a Strength-based attack, you subtract 1d8 from the total damage. However, you have advantage on Dexterity (Acrobatics) checks to contest grappling and enemies have disadvantage on opportunity attacks to hit you when you leave a square adjacent to them without using the disengage action.   Heart Sight. You can touch a creature and magically know its current emotional state. If the target fails a Charisma saving throw with a DC equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier, you also learn the target's alignment. Celestials, fiends, and undead automatically fail this saving throw.   Poison Brewer. You have proficiency with poisoner's kits. Additionally, you have advantage on Intelligence (Nature) checks to find plants that can be crafted into poisons.   Invisibility. As a bonus action, you can magically turn invisible until the start of your next turn or until you attack, cast a spell, make a damage roll, or force someone to make a saving throw. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest. Any equipment the sprite wears or carries is invisible with it. This does not require concentration, nor will it break the concentration of another spell. This is an innate ability and is done at will with no sematic, verbal, or material components.

Languages. You can speak, read, and write common and Sylvan. Most Faerie's rarely write anything down, however, feeling that life is too fleeting to be bothered with the tediousness that writing entails.

Faerie Folk

ACORN WAS NEVER THE STRONGEST IN THE BUNCH. But she knew the world was bigger than the forest she grew up in and she had always longed to spread her wings and explore its vastness. The world called to her and she knew in her tiny heart that she must answer.
—Frost Hollyshine, A Pixie's Journey
Faerie Folk are the children of the forest. They are passionate and have potential far greater than their size would suggest. They revel in the freedom granted to them by their insect-like wings and fear captivity more than anything. For this reason, they are shy and will keep hidden and spy on other creatures until they have determined that they are not hostile, but once they have been seen or decide to reveal themselves, they have an overwhelming urge to be friends with everyone they meet.

Tiny People, Big Perspectives

Faerie Folk experience the world from a completely different perspective. Everything is big to them and that makes the world all the more wondrous… And more terrifying. But Faeries are brave and will sometimes leave the safety of their home forests to go out and seek adventure. They do not live as long as most humanoids but they have a strong desire to make every moment count and strive to live life to the fullest.

Close Friendships

Faerie Folk develop intense friendships with those they encounter and they long for close connection with others. For most Faeries this manifests in the form of tightly-knit communities of Faeries who share a forest home. However, for Faeries who venture out of the comfort of their forests, this means that they are prone to latching on to the first kind hearted people they meet on their adventure and striving to protect them. As much as they would like to forge deep bonds with all creatures, Faerie adventurers must quickly learn to suppress the need to form these bonds with everyone, lest their attachment be exploited by others.
Friends to All Faeries want to be on good terms with everyone. Sprites, have learned caution and are more guarded initially. They feel emotions within the same range as other humanoids and are often very good at controlling their feelings and keeping them in check. However, with their innate desire to find and be with good creatures, they form strong bonds with other creatures quickly… assuming those other creatures can look past their initial prickliness.   All Faeries feel an especially strong connection to Elves and other creatures of the fey, but in general they do not discriminate between races. They tend to believe that everyone has the same potential for good and seek to bring that out in their comrades, regardless of race.
