Waterdeep
For an interactive map, see this interactive map.
Waterdeep, also known as the City of Splendors or the Crown of the North, was the most important and influential city in the North and perhaps in all Faerûn. For this reason it was considered part of the Western Heartlands of the Realms, even though it lay 150 miles north of Daggerford on the shores of the Sword Coast. The city sat "slightly above the 45 degree north latitude line on Toril." The road to Waterdeep was well paved and well patrolled. The city was the hub of trading from the mineral-rich lands to the north, the merchant kingdoms of Amn and Calimshan to the south, the kingdoms of the Inner Sea to the east, and the sea kingdoms and traders to the west. Waterdeep's authority extended between thirty to forty miles from its walls. The surrounding region had a population density of over 200 people per square mile.
Waterdeep was named for its outstanding natural deep-water harbor, and the city that grew up at this site became the commercial crossroads of the northern Realms. More than 100,000 people made their home in Waterdeep. The city sprawled northward from the sea, spreading along the flanks of Mount Waterdeep, which used to be home to the Melairkyn, a mithral-mining dwarven clan, and the entire length and great depth of the mountain was riddled with passages and tunnels, most of which were occupied by deadly creatures whose presence in the mountain predated the founding of the city itself. The halls of Undermountain located beneath the city were a popular target for adventurers, who enjoyed the close vicinity of the city's main taverns and temples where aid could be purchased through donations.
After the Spellplague, it lost its title as Faerûn's most important and influential city to Baldur's Gate. Baldur's Gate grew not only larger than Waterdeep in population but also doubled its area.[citation needed] However, by the end of the 15th century DR, Waterdeep's population surpassed even Calimport's. With an estimated 2,000,000 people, it became the largest city in Faerûn

Icewind Dale
Icewind Dale has snow, ice, and freezing temperatures in abundance. The sun never rises far above the horizon even at the height of summer — and the height of summer is a fleeting thing. Winter here is long and ruthless.
Icewind Dale is surrounded by perilous terrain. The ice cliffs of the Reghed Glacier rise up in the east like prison walls. The towering, snow-capped peaks of the Spine of the World loom to the south. To the north and west, the Sea of Moving Ice churns bergs and floes in an endless tumult, like winter grinding its teeth in anticipation of its next freezing assault. Between these formidable obstacles lies windswept tundra dotted with settlements and the occasional small forest or stand of trees.

Barovia
Situated in a small valley, the land of Barovia was once home to verdant, fertile fields and a peaceful and happy populace. Rivers flowed clear, crops grew under bright sunlight, and nefarious monsters were things of legend.
These days, life in the land of Barovia is harsh, and all-too-often short. The days are dark, travel is dangerous,
and food is scarce. Fields that once grew wheat and corn now only grow kale and other cold weather plants. Groves that yielded bountiful fruit now serve only to fill the slop buckets of pigs.

Vallaki
Located close to the shores of Lake Zarovich, the town of Vallaki (pronounced vah-lah-key) seems like a safe haven against the evils of the Svalich Woods, if not Strahd himself. The town lies beyond the sight of Castle Ravenloft and doesn’t, at first blush, seem as depressed (or oppressed) as the village of Barovia farther east.

Trollskull Alley
A narrow, little-known passage in the North Ward winding through the interior of a city block just north of, and parallel to, the eastern end of Delzorin Street, this alley's dead-end is a favorite night haunt of bored, wealthy youths who waste their coin on dares and games of chance. By day it is safe and crowded with carts of garbage and delivered goods for the businesses that back onto it.
