Life, Death
The party discovers a coastal cave and decides to explore. Inside the cave, they encounter a variety of dangerous animals that they quickly dispatch of. Further into the cave structure, the party is forced into a fight with a baron sahuagin and a giant shark. During this particular encounter, Rin Vidale is eviscerated by the giant shark.
Having learned as much as they could from the fallen cultists, the party decides to turn their attention to the small cave entrance across the river. After taking a quick peek inside the cave, the party ultimately decide it would probably be wise to recover from their wounds and prepare for the fast approaching nightfall. Frozen volunteers to take the first watch and after an uneventful 1st watch she awakens Oharn who had previously volunteered to take the 2nd watch. To everyone's relief, the night passes uneventfully which turns the parties attention back to the unexplored cave across the river. Once inside, the party creeps carefully through the tight entrance until it opens into a larger cavern. PewPew spots a beetle scurrying along the edge of the cavern and instinctively launches his crossbow bolt scoring a direct hit on the now frightened beetle. A chase ensues with PewPew running off while the rest of the party stands around wondering where he ran off to. The beetle manages to give the fighter the slip and almost simultaneously the ranger spots what appears to be a pile of coins in a smaller pocket along the west side of the cavern. When PewPew returns to the party he overhears the ranger explaining his find to the rest of the party. They all follow her to a spot some 30 feet away from what appears to be a sizable pile of coins. Oharn wisely warns everyone to stay away from the coins immediately comprehending the perils that normally accompany such obvious bait. He calls out to Sir Sleepsalot to scour for traps near or around the pile of coins. The rogue easily identifies a well hidden yet crude pit trap filled with sharpened sticks hammered into the bottom of the pit. Upon further inspection, the pile of coins they spotted turns out to be nothing more than a hyper-realistic painting drawn over a small pile of stones. Once realizing the treasure was phony, the party switches back towards the direction the beetle had run off in. They notice another room carved into the cave. In the center of the circular room they notice various bones tossed in a pile while a series of large spiderwebs adorn the edges of the room. PewPew steps inside the room and immediately sets the closest webbing to him on fire with his torch. The web catches fire spreading rapidly but dies out almost instantly after producing a barely visible flame. The monk enters immediately after but his highly attuned senses immediately sense the presence of a nearby giant spider crawling down from atop the back of the room. He tries to avoid being spotted, but his attempts to avoid being seen inadvertently positions his feathery body right into a large section of extremely tough and sticky spider webbing. The barbarian is the first to close the range on the giant spider and manages to score a direct hit with one of the pair of daggers and the spider instinctively shoots her spider silk attempting to entangle the barbarian in a fine mist of silk. Nimbus easily snaps the giant spider's silk webbing which causes the giant spider to rethink it's original tactic and scurry back up it's web. While everyone is distracted with the spider, the halfling rogue places the grip of his longbow on his feet and draws the string with both hands, eventually stretching the notch of a loaded arrow to the base of his chin while laying completely flat on his back against the cave floor. Sir Sleepsalot, now completely prone, imitates what can only best be described as a halfling quasi-catapult and releases an arrow at the retreating spider, barely missing. While the barbarian was dealing with the giant spider, the cleric Oharn was trying desperately to drag the monk free from his web entanglement. He did not expect the smooth surface of the cave floor to cause him to stumble so easily and immediately fails to budge the monk. Seeing the futility in trying to pull the monk free, he grabs a torch and opts to burn the webbing. The fire from the torch immediately frees the squirming monk from his silken bonds, but leaves him slightly singed. The monk, once freed, launches a lethal jumping crane-kick to the injured giant spider splattering dead spider guts everywhere. He proceeds to wade into the spider guts to recover the daggers thrown by the barbarian, wiping the blades as best he can, then offers them back to Nimbus who smiles graciously while taking her daggers back. The cleric Oharn examines a dark brown chest seated near the front of the spider's room and inside discovers 4 black cloaks. He removes them from the chest and stashes them away. Meanwhile, the elf ranger Frozen decides to double back away from the spider cave and is moving so fast she comes face to face with a trio of mer-men before she even notices their presence. Luckily, the mer-men though armed, are not aggressive and seem to be trying to carefully sneak past her. The merman leader motions to everyone to remain as quiet as possible before silently skulking back the direction the party had originally entered the caves from. Frozen lets out a sigh of relief once she realizes they mean her no harm and she continues exploring the rest of the cave structure, eventually coming into a larger portion of the cavern that had a deep pool of water in the center. On one side, a tent was pitched along with a fire pit that was currently not in use. Moving into the cave she spots what appears to be a goblin holding a crossbow near the backside exit of the caves. She shouts out loudly to her party warning them of more enemies being spotted. Just as she finishes shouting, Frozen catches a glimpse of the injured beetle that had evaded PewPew when they first entered the cave and with one well placed arrow, finishes it off. Nimbus clearly hears Frozen's shouts and although she is unable to make out exactly what is being said, she can clearly tell from the tone that it's not good news. Fearing the worst, she charges back out towards the main cavern in full barbarian rage, sprinting into the room Frozen had called out from. The barbarian takes the most direct route to Frozen which happens to intersect with a deep pool in the center of the room. Before the barbarian can halt her momentum, she unintentionally finds herself chest deep in the dark pool when she feels a sudden sharp nibble on her leg. She instinctively retaliates with a massive strike with her battle axe on the underwater assailant causing the huge creature to temporarily surface. Nimbus captures a brief glimpse of a massive shark's dorsal fin and the faint dark silhouette of a 40 foot shark just beneath the surface of the brackish water. From the shores of the pool, Frozen grabs Nimbus' hand and does her best to drag Nimbus out of the water before the shark can get a hold of her and succeeds in bringing her safely back on shore. Oharn is the next person to come charging in and immediately scours the room for something to fight, and spots a crab on the far side of the deep pool. He launches a guided bolt of radiant light at the crab causing it to explode into thousands of tiny pieces sending glowing crab shell and meat flying in all directions. It's not long before the entire party has arrived and Frozen warns everyone of the two dangers she is aware of: the shark in the water and the goblins near the cave exit in the back. PewPew decides he's ready to test his crossbow skills on the giant shark and leaps into the deep pool and scoring a shot at the giant shark as it approached his position. Unfortunately, the crossbow bolt barely scratched the tail of the shark and before he can scramble back to shore, the shark lunges savagely into the midsection of PewPew nearly severing his entire body in half. The vicious strike leaves him a bloody unconscious mess floating head down in the water bleeding profusely. In a panic, Frozen tries her best to drag PewPew back onto shore, but this proves to be a fatal error as the shark has at this point already taken a firm grasp of the bottom half of PewPew's body and Frozen watches in horror as she immediately falls backwards pulling only the upper torso of PewPew's body onto the shore. Upon seeing PewPew's body fall apart in two, Oharn offers up a brief and emotional prayer to his deity requesting blessings and peace to fill PewPew's body in his final moments. The party turns their attention to their remaining foes: the small group of goblins and worgs still barring their exit on the backside of the cave. The ranger and the rogue make short work of the goblins along the western side of the exit and the halfling pauses mid-fight to collect the middle toe of his latest goblin victim. As the battle begins to sway in the parties' favor, a baron sahuagin surfaces from the same dark pool the giant shark was seen swimming within earlier. The enraged baron sahuagin demands the group to explain to him why they have trespassed into his domain. The party turns their attention to the new threat and attempt to overpower him. It soon becomes apparent their new opponent is much stronger than they had expected and before long the barbarian is brutally stabbed in the midsection by the baron's trident attack. Still reeling from the trident's blow, Nimbus finds herself the victim of a worg's lunging bite from behind leaving her bloodied and prone on the cold cavern floor barely hanging onto consciousness. Oharn casts healing words on Nimbus and manages to partially mend some of her injuries, but fearing the worst, the cleric pleads with the Baron sahuagin to allow the party to leave peacefully. After a few seconds pondering the request, the sahuagin insists the party leave the dead guy behind and leave immediately. The party is hesitant and somewhat distrustful of the sahuagin at first, but in the end everyone alive slowly and cautiously retreats towards the back entrance of the cave. <Surviving party members are informed to level their PCs to level 3 before start of next session> Session #3 Ends.
