Kevardan Romaña
The Arcanist in the Cave and the Master of Staves. A survivor of Karsus's Folly and of High Netheril who sealed himself in a dungeon complex awaiting the return of civilization. He was able to survive the fall of Netheril and decided to await the return of civility in the North within a specially designed dungeon created to test those who came to it to determine the right time to awake him.
He was an Arcanist of Netheril, an archmagi, who specialized in the creation of magical staves. This earned him his honorific the Master of Staves. After the fall he decided to await the return of civility. The dungeon he made was created to test all who entered to see if it was a good time to reawaken. The four challenges are labeled thusly.
The Challenge of Speed, a wizard must be quick on their feet and capable of making split second decisions. That is why this chamber with rolling boulders was created. The reward was a Staff of Freedom of Movement.
The Challenge of the Unknown, a wizard must be able to fight against even that which they do not know. This water filled chamber abuses the surprising stealth of the Froghemoth to give an unknown challenge. The reward is a Staff of Aquatic Movement.
The Challenge of History, this one is not so much a challenge as a history lesson that tells of Karsus's Folly and why mantling a god is a bad idea. The reward is a thematically appropriate Staff of Counterspell.
After the other three were completed the Challenge of Power was opened. A captured Demi-Lich was designed to kill the party before being pacified by the dungeon. They would then be revived and Romaña's simulacrum would explain why being a lich was bad. The People Who Do Jobs For Money were able to kill the Demi-Lich and take the Staff of Death Ward to Romaña's surprise.
Once all staves were placed in the alter a Staff of Thunder and Lightning (Very, Very, Frightening) was revealed and the way to Romaña's sanctum was opened. The People Who Do Jobs For Money completed the tests and awakened Romaña.
