Dragonsblood
Dragonsblood is a rare crystal whose name gives away how it's formed. The blood of dragons spilled on stones eventually gives birth to these powerful magical catalysts; their color the same crimson that was required to create them.
Seemingly having no possibility of refinement, its raw form is potent enough. As magical as the dragons themselves, the crystal can be used as a replacement for almost any known material spell component. As a result of this and the difficulty of harvesting it, it is an exceptionally expensive crystal that every kingdom across the world seeks.
The size of the crystals is in direct correlation to the size and age of the dragon which bled to make them, with stories of 20-foot tall crystals being found within the lairs of Great Wyrm dragons. For obvious reasons, however, none of these stories can be confirmed and the crystals aren't retrievable. Old tales exist of dragons who befriended legendary heroes of yore, offering their blood in the form of crystals as thanks for great deeds and favors done.
To even see dragonsblood in your lifetime is a rarity even for the most elite and wealthy of nations, acting as a point of pride for those that have. Many scholars around the world, however, tell cautionary tales of ever using this rare crystal. There is always a price for exchanging blood for power, especially when it is not your own.
