Session 12: The Devil's Doorstep Report
General Summary
Having fought the fiend and their cultists that were in the sanctum hidden underneath Vanthampur's manor, the party decided that it was best to flee as they heard a clamor of footsteps coming down the corridor. Once clearly a sewer corridor, the tunnels underneath the villa were now dimly lit with lanterns fitted with green glass, and the pungent scent of incense could be smelt all over the place. With the sounds in the tunnel reverberating, the party had no idea of knowing how many people were on their way to meet them and decided to do the only thing that was logical to them: find a place to hide.
Thinking fast and acting faster, the adventurers cut a few corners to find a sturdy wooden door that was only slightly jammed - they took the risk and hid inside, among a couple of exotic animal carcasses that were hung from the ceiling. Amid a few mousetraps that amazingly everyone was able to avoid, they waited until the sounds of their pursuers went away, which took the better part of half an hour. Waiting for an additional hour, the party tended to their wounds and discussed tactics, all the while keeping an eye and an ear toward the door and the corridor behind it.
When they concluded that the coast was clear, the heroes stealthily made their way back into the tunnels, careful not to let anyone know of their approach. That's when they saw a red-robed cultist with a golden devil mask, just like the ones that had been inside the sanctum with the fiend! Taking the necessary risk, the party pushed their attack on the cultist, only to discover that an invisible imp had been among them for who knows how long! A second cultist joined the fight, as well as a second and third imp. The red-robed acolytes were touched by the arcane, and managed to inflict a few grievous wounds on Fenrir and Richard, occupying the healers from joining in the fray.
Eventually, however, with a few quick crossbow shots and a divine wrath, the cult fanatics fell to the party. One of the cultists was known to Fenrir - Blaze Mukar, the disgraced Flaming Fist officer who was demoted by Liara Portyr only a day earlier. Gathering their wits, they then decided that the only way forward, was the way back - they reasoned that the tunnels were too much of an unknown territory for them to jump in head-first, so they had to double back. With Airam in the form of a bear at the front, the adventurers knocked the double doors that led back into the sanctum off its hinges, revealing the nine occupants of the room.
Duke Thalamra Vanthampur stood in the middle of the room, her form lit by the various chandeliers that made up the room. Less visible were the eight cultists that stood directly underneath the chandeliers - clad in red robes and wearing golden devil masks, each one a little different from the rest.
"Who are you, and what the hell are you doing in my basement?," Vanthampur demanded.
