Session 14: A New Hope? Report

General Summary

Two months and a tenday ago, the Holy City of Elturel was destroyed. Following the chaos, the people of Elturel who were spared from the havoc spread from the kingdom, and communities of refugees sprouted among nearby cities such as Scornubel and Iriaebor, as well as in Baldur's Gate. It is that last one where new light has been shed on a murder mystery with two dozen Elturian casualties, as the reign of the last remaining Duke, Thalamra Vanthampur, came down.    Following a short civil war and an all-out attack on Vanthampur's compound, letters had been found compromising the family's role in the killings of Hellriders and their descendants, with no clear reason why. Also found in their compound was a large bronze shield with the likeness of a demonic face, an intricate puzzle box with latches, switches, buttons, and keyholes; and the Hellrider knight Fenrir, the only member of a heroic party left alive after a failed raid on the villa about a month ago.    Having recovered in the Harborside Hospital for a few days, Fenrir was introduced to two other Hellriders and a Candlekeep scholar by the new Grand Duke of Baldur's Gate, master tactician Liara Portyr, who briefed the foursome on the current status quo. Believing the puzzle box to hold some secrets to the murders of fellow Hellriders and other Elturians, she entrusted this new foursome with bringing the strange object to the library monastery of Candlekeep, referencing an avowed called Silvira Savikas; supposedly a powerful archmage with a special interest in this kind of thing.    As the new party acquainted themselves with each other, they resupplied themselves at the market before lodging in the Blushing Mermaid, and made for the Coast Way the next day, stopping to rent some horses from Garynmor Stables. Right as the adventurers were about to leave town, they heard someone running in their direction, pleading them to wait...
