Session 15: The Coast Way to Candlekeep Report
General Summary
At the Basilisk Gate, overlooking Stonyeyes, your party is complete as fellow Hellrider Leojim joins your group. Another couple of minutes pass while he secures a horse, and you are on your way, slowly finding a path through the destitute refugees from Elturel in the Outer City. You ride through several neighborhoods, with people eyeing your group nervously. As you ride onto the first of four bridges to cross Wyrm's Crossing, a small drizzle starts to develop into a downpour, and you momentarily dismount when Bertha notices an elderly woman reaching for her coinpurse. You spread some literal warmth and tend to their sick before continuing on your way.
Out of Rivington, you meet a mother and father with their preteen son who are working to get their cart free of the mud. After some conversation, you allow them to join your group for safety in numbers, and together you ride down the Coast Way, making frequent stops for food and drink, and to exchange stories. On the second night, however, the family of three shows their true nature: after poisoning half of the party with a sleeping agent, they tried to make off with the large bronze shield that was given to your party in addition to the puzzle box, for further investigation in Candlekeep. In a short but spectacular fight, you managed to kill two of the fiends who had previously changed their appearance to look like Tom, Sarah, and Emile, and you scared off the last one.
The Shield, thankful for its rescue, started talking to the group telepathically - regaling the tale of the Hellriders the way that it had truly happened: not with a grand victory for Elturel, but in a shameful retreat from Hell. The Shield, it explained, knew all of this, because it was there: the Shield had belonged to the angel who had lead the Flight of the Hellriders, and was vanquished on the fields of Avernus.
The following day, the party arrived at Candlekeep, and after a short but intense exchange with the Avowed at the gates, they were allowed passage inside, where Bertha was quick to go find her mentor, Traxigor, while the others were left with their escort, Parmak, who took them to the Hearth for some food and drink. There, the party met an ogre called Little One, who busies himself with a book about the history and customs of the Avowed.
After some time waiting, Fenrir made his way back to the Emerald Door for a word with the Gatewarden. That's when an evil-looking imp with a huge belly apparated in front of the paladin, and explained that he was to be their guide to see Silvira Savikas.
