Session 28: The arcanist's tower Report
General Summary
Finding yourselves in the middle of a sitting room, surrounded by contorted corpses that are performing unnatural acts of horror, you fight the terror building up inside of you. Leo, who had already fled with a scarred look upon his face, found a third one of these creatures running towards the house as the others tried to fight off the two that had them in their grasp. When Caja cut off the head of one of the two sisters, there was very little blood, but a jellyfish-like creature that was almost invisible to the naked eye crawled out of the woman's corpse, assaulting the barbarian with its necrotic pseudopods. When the second of these creatures attempted to contort its body even further, the unimpressed Fenrir Firecam used his flail to knock the undead husk to the wall, also freeing this individual's demonic essence. You had been warned about these creatures, these dybbuks, that take control of a host corpse and pretend to be the person behind the husk. With their true nature revealed, it didn't take long for the party to shake them off, with the trio eventually disappearing into a mist of green motes of conjuration magic.
With this encounter out of the way, you decided to explore the house before continuing down to the arcanist's tower, with Caja discovering an entire room full of used and disposed corpses. A short discussion on whether to burn down the house or not followed, eventually closing on leaving the house intact for fear of the fire spreading. You made your way to the Tower of Bèr Nölmien and encountered a square upon which the tower sits, surrounded by a ring of thirty feet where several corpses, both fiendish as well as humanoid, littered the streets like patches of freshly fallen snow. Upon closer inspection, you found a riddle etched into the door. It only took you one wrong guess to find out what had befallen the previous visitors, as powerful lightning shot out in a line originating from the door, almost knocking Ronaldus Swanstone unconsious. The second guess, however, gave you access into a new room filled with different kinds of mushrooms, weaponry, and glowing torches in different colors. You also saw a numer of stone statues with colored gems on their foreheads, and before you could act, the lights in the chamber went out and you could hear the statues shuffle towards you. Through quick thinking, Ron dispelled the trap, and you were left to decipher a second riddle.
After another few hours of thinking aloud, you finally remembered that writing was the key to this wizard's wheelhouse, and you managed to solve the inscription on the central pedestal, teleporting you to another level of the tower. This square room was completely unassuming, with weathered cabinets and bookcases complimenting a single worn altar with burned-out candles. The entire area was dusty and filled with cobwebs, and it took you quite some time to figure out that your reflections in the mirrors that were embedded in the marble walls were the complete opposite of the chamber you found yourselves in - an immaculate and beautiful room like a wizard's study, with spellbooks and celestial charts abound. You also noticed writing on the mirror's surface, signifying another three riddles. Eventually, you managed to discern that the answers to the riddles respectively led you to the outside of the tower, back to the room with the stone golems, or up, to another level that was decorated to accustom the arcanist's living quarters.
It was in the living quarters that you found some of the things you came looking for: some parchment and high-quality ink, as well as a journal from one of the wizard's apprentices...
