Session 4: The Dungeon of the Dead Three Report
General Summary
In the aftermath of a tavern fight between Reya Mantlemorn, Richard, Tarina, and her companion, the party crafted a plan for their assault on The Frolicking Nymph - if these cultists had any information on the whereabouts of Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard, Elturel, and all of its inhabitants, then they would beat it out of them. Whereas some adventurers were eager to advance in the late evening, the majority chose to spend some time with their newly bought items, have a good night’s sleep, and meet up at the bathhouse in the morning. As they reconvened for breakfast, they noticed a Watch soldier eyeing them from across the room: he left quietly as soon as they noticed him.
In the dark of the night, the party made their way to the bathhouse unbothered - a group of armed adventurers such as themselves having little to fear from the lesser creatures of the night. The gate to the bathhouse, they found, was unlocked. As they entered the main facility, both Airam and Fenrir were surprised by a trio of cultists who jumped at the party from the shadows. As Airam fled, wounded, into the North pool, a fourth cultist entered the fray, tossing deathly bolts of necrotic energy. When the dust settled and the fight was won, the adventurers discovered a beautifully decorated bathhouse stocked with scented oils and herbs, massage tables, dry towels… and a hidden hatch under one of the tables, leading to a pitch black dungeon underneath.
The dungeon, they quickly found, was part of a subterranean network of tunnels surrounding a series of altars dedicated to the Dead Three. They first encountered two worshipers of Bane, armored and well-trained soldiers who were in the process of torturing a prisoner they found out to be named Kilim Jhasso, a fourthborn son of a lower noble house. The now-freed prisoner made his way back to the dungeon entrance promising wealth aplenty if they sought him out later on.
Over in the next room, a necromancer was working to animate the dead body of a female abductee as the party kicked in the door. Following a short but brutal combat that left Patience dead, the master of souls managed to escape into the next room over from the altar to Bane, where they found their end at the wrath of the party. The necromancer, they discovered, had on them a crudely written scroll that could bring Patience back to life - if they acted quickly enough. Following a brief ritual cast by Artena, the resurrection spell was successfully cast and the party was (almost) ready to continue their dungeon delve - after recovering from the fights, that is.
Well-rested, the adventurers made their way down into a gas-filled chamber as they pocketed a candle with a magical essence from the altar to Myrkul, following the corridor to a trio of half-collapsed crypts. The first of the three had long been emptied of any valuables; the second contained a decorative sarcophagus, radiating evocation magic. The third chamber was stocked to the brim with undead zombies, clawing at Richard and Varon’s faces as the others successfully moved the heavy sarcophagus in front of the door to lock the zombies in. While that was happening, Patience noticed that there was movement afoot in the previous chamber. Seeing three flail-swinging cultists running her way, she collapsed the gas-filled chamber with a spark from her fingertips, leaving the cultists under the rubble.
They then reached a torture chamber with two bodies in it, suspended from the ceiling with heavy chains. One of the two was still alive, and told them about the horrors that the cultists had inflicted on them, seemingly choosing their victims at random. The emaciated female tiefling introduced herself as Vendetta Kress. After some pressure, she added that she is a wine distributor under employment for the Oathoon patriar family - her captors asked her seemingly random questions, but were especially interested in the Oathoons and their (personal) security arrangements. Vendetta decided to stay in the room until the party had given the all clear.
Exiting the other side of the torture chamber, quick action kept a sentry sentinel from alerting his fellows - the party quick to act before he could even speak. This allowed the adventurers to ‘subdue’ the sentry’s four comrades in their sleep before making their way to the last chamber they could find. They found a sarcophagus filled to the brim with blood, standing in a room full of entrails and leftovers. A frightened elderly woman peeked out from under the sarcophagus, revealing herself to be a follower of Bhaal using illusory magic as they repeatedly stabbed Artena and Airam until they could be stopped. The woman’s last breath left her body in a crazed giggle as she choked in her own blood, the party left none the wiser about where to go next…
