Saltmarsh

Saltmarsh is a small town on the coast of Alaron on the Sea of Swords, at the mouth of the Swanmay River, where the majority of residents make their living from the ocean – legally or otherwise… The kingdom of Callidyrr has recently won the decades-long war against its neighbours far to the south Snowden and by proxy, Amn. Although at a heavy cost. Now peace has been declared, the king is focused on building Callidyrr and the area of Alaron around Whitefish Bay into a center of wealth and trade instead.   Though it has been left to its own devices for many years, Saltmarsh has now been earmarked for expansion into a trade port. Due to its location at the Swanmay River and along the coast. As a result many incomers – including war veterans tasked with keeping the peace – have recently arrived in town, a position not all of the locals are wholly comfortable with.   This influx of newcomers is doubly focused due to the discovery of rich deposits of precious metals close to the east of Saltmarsh. Baldur's Gate, interested in the resources has appointed a dwarven mining company to establish a headquarters there with a view to further increasing their crown’s wealth, whilst also placing a foothold in the region region while Callidyrr rebuilds closer to Whitefish Bay.   Decades ago, a loose confederation of pirates and slavers known as the Sea Princes terrorized the waters around Saltmarsh. Recently, as part of its renewed attention in the region, the crown deployed the navy to put down most of the pirate threat and reopen the waters for trade and safe passage.   Locals with long memories doubt the effectiveness of this, and tavern rumormongers whisper that the Sea Princes are still out there, gathering strength until they can once more terrorize the waters of the Sea of Swords.
