Chondalwood

Chondalwood is a large ancient forest bordering Vilhon Reach and The Shaar. It is a forest of elusive nature dwelling races that fiercely guard their sacred lands. Thousands of years ago there was a road constructed that traveled past the lands of Vilhon Reach, through the dense forest of Chondalwood, then finally leading down into The Shaar. All sorts of races lived together in peace, the road connecting their nations, though this peace was eventually shattered when humans began to hunt the native inhabitants.   It first started with humans binding Treants and utilizing them for wood to build with. Treant wood was considered a luxury and nobles paid a high price for it. Satyr also began to be hunted during this time, mercenaries would come in and strip them of their horns and hooves, leaving them alive but incredibly maimed. In response to this the elves of the city of Alora approached the nearby human settlements, the humans in these settlements denied all involvement and even offered their services in protecting the forest. The Aloriaan wood elves agreed to this and allowed the human militia to enter the forest and construct guard stations. It was during this time that elves began disappearing. The humans would isolate the elves and then abduct them to be sold into the slave trade. Elves commonly fetched a high price due to their exquisite beauty and their incredibly long life spans, one elf could remain a slave to a family for generations. With these kidnappings, the Aloriaans attacked the human settlements in their forest in an attempt to drive them out. The humans took this opportunity to only increase the amount of elves in which they could sell, and the elves were quickly overpowered and their homes ravaged.   All manner of races in the forest attempted to stand up to the humans, but it seemed hopeless. It wasn't until a group of elves suddenly emerged exhbiting powerful magical abilities that they were able to drive back the humans. These elves were able to call upon the magic of nature and unleash devastating assaults. Due to this newfound might, the humans chose to retreat and the forest was left to recover. Though their numbers had already been decimated, and the horrors humans had unleashed against them would never fade.   It was after this that Chondalwood closed their borders and became a secretive nation. Centaurs and Voadkyn roamed the borders prohibiting outsiders entry.   While contact was minimal, Chondalwood seemed to flourish. This continued for decades until 1300 DR. When the Spellplague occurred, the Underchasm opened up swallowing a large part of Chondalwood. The effect this had on the inhabitants of Chondalwood is unknown for even with this great tragedy their borders are still fiercely protected. Although there have been sightings of the border guardians bearing spellscars across their bodies, this leads many to assume that even the secretive woods of Chondalwood had been devastated by the spellplague. It is assumed that Chondalwood would have suffered great casualties, but due to their distrust of outsiders the inhabitants refuse all aid offered to them.
There are rumors that Chondalwood contains the entrance to the lost city of Rucien-Xan, an elven city said to be located within Elysium. It is said the city is contained within a large forest filled with all manner of fey creatures and is inhabited by Wood Elves. There have been a few ancient texts illustrating a large city settled into a massive tree overlooking the forests, but these drawings have only made cryptic references and there is not much info provided.
