Hordelands

The Hordelands, also known as The Endless Wastes, and as Taan by the natives, was once part of the territory of the mighty empire of Imaskar and was populated by horsemen tribes, most notably the Tuigans.   The Hordelands are loosely controlled by many clans who occasionally trade, fight, or gather for celebration. The Golden Way passes through here but it is merely marker stones, not a road as in other parts of Faerun. For anyone not from the Hordelands, it is considered dangerous to pass through here due to the language barrier and the unforgiving nature they have towards southerners.   The lands here are cold and unforgiving. Farming here is near impossible and the natives must rely on hunting to sustain themselves. Even though most of the clans are human it is rare for them to speak common, they typically only know their own local dialects.   A notable tribe within the Hordelands are the Tuigans. They used to be small horseman clans but were united under horselord Bjorn Youf, meaning Bear God. Under his banner, the Grand Army of the Tuigan invaded the nations of Thay, Thesk, The Great Dale, and The Free Marches.   Rumors about Bjorn Youf, or the so called "Bear God" circulated during this time and there were widely varying tales about him. Many claimed he was the size of a Grizzly Bear standing almost eight feet tall, with a brown braided beard and scars across his face. Most of the soldiers who circulated the rumors never actually saw him, yet they would spread tales such as, he is able to singlehandedly beat a Grizzly Bear in one on one combat. Or that he can pick up an entire horse, one in each arm.   The Eastern countries brought in their armies from various nations to fight against the Tugian threat, and the war itself lasted around 12 years before a peace agreement could finally be negotiated.   During this time though The Iron Army of Thesk lost many of its own numbers through battle and due to the harsh and unfamiliar climate. Nevertheless, they pushed through and were able to end the war on peaceful terms.   Citizens who fought in this war still hold many stigmas against the locals of the Hordelands, and it has been widely debated in Thesk whether or not they should open their borders to trade with them.   Outside of the war and the locals, this land is still hard to survive in, summers are at best mild in the high 60's with winters reaching well below 0 and snow piling for months with no break. Sailing and fishing on these icy waters is a common trade, allowing them access to the northern tundra and the Great Glacier.

The Tuigans were organized by clan and the name "Tuigan" was actually the name of the largest clan. There were many clans and villages outside of the Tuigans though, smaller and larger villages, some peaceful and some not, the Hordelands hosts a variety of locals that all differ in their own unique ways.   Outside of the Hordelands though, it is common for people to hold a stigma against the natives and refer to all of them as "Tuigans" regardless of what clan they actually belong to.
