Ventum

Ventum is a large northern country on Faerun. It contains a multitude of mountain ranges, and is overall a rocky and hilly country. The farmlands that this country maintains are commonly found on sloping sides of hills, and cities are built vertically with gaps between them, as they are placed on hill and mountain tops.   Each city, and many houses, will have a port built into the side high off the ground. These ports serve as landing locations for Hot Air Balloons, a miraculous local necessity brought about by intensive study and innovation in the field of steam power. Hot Air Balloons are the most common form of transportation through this region, and stand alone countryside homes will typically always have their own port built into their home or into a separate nearby building.   Outside of Hot Air Balloons, steam energy is utilized in other various means, such as plumbing, heating during the cooler months, and assisting in forging of materials and construction of buildings.   The interest in steam rose sharply after the Spellplague devastated Ventum, and while magic is not banned it is typically looked down upon in this country. It is seen as nothing more than a quick and cheap grab for power, while real innovation happens without the assistance of magic.   The government in Ventum is run by a democratically elected Minister every five years. On a local scale, mayors are common from small villages to larger cities.   The weather here is known for being quite chilly, with mild summers and cold heavy winters. The winter after the Spellplague is considered to have been the worst winter Ventum has ever seen. Snow accumulation buried houses and blizzards raged, preventing the use of hot air balloons, and the cold lasted well into the spring, preventing the planting of seasonal crops. This led to mass starvation and death from the cold. After the Spellplague, the country invested in installing steam-based heating in every house so that nobody would have to go cold in even the harshest of winters.
Alongside steam, wind power is also commonplace in running homes and workshops. Buildings are often built on sheer drops offs to allow for ease of travel between areas.
