HotDK 37: “Red Dead Wizard”

2020-01-03

Rezmir is dead. Nothing but a pile of dust and ash on the floor. What she left behind though is both interesting and useful. Of note is the sword, known as ‘Hazirawn ’, so known because it tells Pubert Adams its name and the two seem to bond immediately. Probably of bigger importance though is her journal. Though written in Draconic, Brehana Warpip casts the spell Comprehend Languages and is able to read enough of it to confirm a few things.

  • The Cult of the Dragon is definitely trying to free Tiamat from Her prison in the Nine Hells
  • The hoard of gold is not only for massive spells component costs but also as Tribute. The Queen of Dragons will need a huge hoard of treasure to serve as her thrown
  • The Red Wizards of Thay helping the Cult are exiles of Thay and their motivations are not entirely clear to Rezmir but she complains of their arrogance despite acknowledging their skill at ritual magic
  • The Cloud Giant who owns this castle is named Blagothkus . Rezmir is not quite sure of his motivations for helping the Cult but she is quite proud of her abilities at having secured his assistance in the use of his castle to transport the treasure hoard to the Well of Dragons.
  • After searching Rezmir’s chambers, and helping yourself to breakfast from the storeroom across the hall for which she also had a key, you determine that the Red Wizard you met before is now a larger threat than you thought and decide to take him down.

There is a moment of confusion on his part as you enter the large room where he is studying and presumably preparing the ritual mentioned in Rezmir’s journal. He, arrogantly, thinks you are there to check on his progress again and complains loudly of Rezmir’s constant interruptions. When it becomes clear, though, that you intend his death Rath Modar shows his prowess with magic – not to mention that one of the four Gargoyles is not a just a statue.

You manage to take out Modar and his Gargoyle but get a little singed by a fireball in the process. It was clear he was trying to buy time to escape more than actually fight though as you stopped him short of making it to the balcony and you found a Scroll of Feather Fall in his possession. His other possessions included a Staff of Fire , which was claimed by Brehana Warpip , as well as a Scroll of Dimension Door and a Scroll of Fireball .

After dealing with Rath Modar by throwing his body off the balcony so it could not be found, you proceed to finish exploring the lower courtyard area. You find the kitchen (finally) full of Kobolds doing all the work under the watchful eye of a Gryphon as well as finally locating the barracks where your Dragonwing disguises allow you to bunk down for another long rest.
