Fair Coin

Fair Coin is a burgeoning trading town situated a day's journey south of the illustrious city of Silverymoon, in the fantasy realm of Faerun. This locale is renowned for its large temple dedicated to Waukeen, the goddess of trade and wealth, which stands proudly at the heart of the town. The temple is not only a place of worship but also a bustling trade center that attracts a diverse array of travelers and traders from both land and river routes.    

Trade and Commerce

The town of Fair Coin has grown into a pivotal trading post due to its strategic position. Merchants, adventurers, and visitors of all sorts pass through its gates, contributing to the town's melting pot of cultures and goods. Its markets are a tapestry of the realm's diversity, offering exotic items and everyday necessities alike. The river that runs by the town serves as a liquid road, bringing commerce and travelers from afar, while the town's well-maintained roads ensure a constant flow of land-based trade.  

Town Districts

  • Central Market: Dominated by the imposing Temple of Waukeen, the Central Market serves as the heart of trade and commerce.A large plaza around the temple hosts traveling merchants who set up wagons, tents, and temporary structures to showcase their wares.Permanent buildings surrounding the temple house resident merchants and craftsmen, creating a bustling hub of economic activity. The Mint tavern is located here.
  • Hillside: Situated in the south-eastern part of Fair Coin, Hillside primarily consists of homes and apartments for the working class. While there are a few inns, the district is mostly residential, providing a comfortable and supportive environment for the town's labor force.
  • Dawn Gate: Located on the eastern side of the city near the walls, Dawn Gate houses higher-end shops and wealthier residents. The Dawn Gate serves as one of the main fairways into and out of the city, with roads leading east and eventually north to Silverymoon.
  • Bridge Town: Marked by the largest bridge over the river on the western side, Bridge Town is a diverse district. Home to some of the seedier parts of the town, warehouses, fisheries, and boat-launch points contribute to the district's unique character. The Scratched Coin tavern is found in this area.
  • Eve Gate: On the western side of Fair Coin, Eve Gate is where the main road runs south-west away from town.Permanent shops, residential areas, and the housing for many priests of the Temple are situated in this district. The Fair Coin press works out of a building in the Eve Gate district.

Festivals and Culture

  Summer Equinox Festival During this vibrant celebration in the middle of summer, an older trading vessel is set ablaze in a ritual burning on the river, symbolizing both the end of its service and the eternal cycle of commerce and trade that sustains Fair Coin. This festival draws crowds from all over, eager to partake in the festivities and witness the spectacular fire on the water.   The Gleaming As the harvest season wraps up, Fair Coin honors Waukeen and gives thanks for the year’s commerce with a festival of lights. Every business and home shines with lanterns, and candles float down the river, creating a stream of light. Merchants offer special “gleaming deals,” and a grand parade features floats adorned with reflective surfaces and shimmering fabrics, symbolizing the gleam of prosperity.   The Melding Markets This festival marks the opening of trade routes after the winter. The Melding Markets celebrate the diversity of Fair Coin’s traders. The day is characterized by a massive, town-wide open market where rare goods from distant lands are showcased. Cultural performances from various visiting traders enrich the event, and the festival ends with a feast where all participants share dishes from their homelands.  

Heroes of Fair Coin

The Heroes of Fair Coin, a group of adventurers from a previous campaign, have made their home in a stately residence just beyond the city's protective walls. Their heroic acts from five years prior, which saved the town, are still sung by bards and celebrated by the locals. Their presence adds a layer of safety and prestige to the town.  

Druidic Influence

Since the Heroes' monumental defense of the city against the Yuan-Ti, druids have been increasingly drawn to Fair Coin, weaving natural splendor into the urban fabric. They have integrated a touch of the wild, marrying it harmoniously with the town's traditional stone architecture. Greenery drapes over balconies, and gardens bloom in public squares, making the city a unique blend of the civilized and the natural.  

Temple of Waukeen

The Temple of Waukeen holds a central position in Fair Coin, both spiritually and economically. Most residents follow Waukeen, and the temple's high priests often play influential roles in town politics. Past mayors have been affiliated with the temple, showcasing the close connection between religion and governance.  

Social Hierarchy

In addition to the influential Temple of Waukeen, the City Watch plays a crucial role in maintaining order and protecting merchants. The Wright Family Farms, led by Virgil Wright, contributes to the city's stability by providing agricultural resources.  

Entertainment

Traveling bards are the main source of nightly entertainment, offering a diverse range of songs and stories. The Central Market bustles with activity during the day, featuring an array of goods, crafting demonstrations, street food, and buskers.  

Education

Fair Coin provides basic education for children, emphasizing practical skills related to trades. The Waukeen School of Coin offers advanced courses in accounting, mercantile economics, and higher mathematics. Ambitious students may seek further education in Silverymoon.  

Local Cuisine

Fair Coin's transient population contributes to a rich street food scene, offering a diverse array of flavors from around the world.   Silver Catfish, caught in the town's river, is a popular dish served stuffed with creamed potatoes, rosemary and a spicy red pepper that grows natively in the wetlands around town.  

Leadership and Decision-Making

The mayor, supported by advisors and trusted friends, oversees executive decisions, often consulting the leadership of the Temple of Waukeen for important matters. Monthly town hall meetings provide a platform for citizens to address concerns, shaping the mayor's popularity and chances of re-election.  

Frogfolk and Ghost Elves

The town's diversity is further enriched by the Frogfolk from the southern swamps (Swamplight Village), who have recently become a more common sight. They contribute to the town's economy through unique trades and have become a subject of fascination among the residents.
  Moreover, Fair Coin has become a sanctuary for the elusive Ghost Elves, a once-lost race. These ethereal beings, though seldom seen, add a layer of mystery and enchantment to the streets of Fair Coin.

Malcolm Oakside: The mayor of Fair Coin   Padan: Elder druid that takes up residence in the forest outside of town   Cassian Keyes: Young man that isn't the captain of the town guard   Moose: Old Dog that is the captain of the town guard   Jeerf: Leader of the nearby village of Frogfolk. A not-uncommon appearance in town.   Raia Corkbutton- Young reporter for the Fair Coin Ledger.   Gavreel Whitereed- Popular writer for the 'Fair Coin Ledger' with eyes on the mayor's office.
