Giant Sky Oak
"My home village was in the Deep Woods, so I was already quite used to sky oak when I grew up. One time I tried to climb one from my friend's tree house, I didn't get close to the top but I did almost fall off. I was saved by his mother's quick thinking and levitation spell, then she told me 'Your stupidity is going to get you killed, boy.' "
Basic Information
Anatomy
Sky oak are massive trees that can grow hundreds of feet tall. Their branches spread out far and often tangle with neighboring trees. Coupled with their wide leaves, they often create a canopy that leave the deep woods of Aurora cloaked in darkness.
Their trunks are very wide and it's bark appears like thick vines that curl and twist around the trung of the tree. Occasionally, the trees can be completely hallow on the inside and still live.
Genetics and Reproduction
Sky Oak does not reproduce often as they are very sturdy trees that can live for thousands of years, however every 10 or 15 years the adult trees will go through a synchronized 'seeding season'. During this time, the canopy will turn white with seedlings, and then they will eventually rain down to the ground, their fall slowed by special white flowers attached to the seeds that act as parachutes.
During this time thousands of seeds will fall, but very few of them will take, with only a handful of new saplings growing ever season.
Growth Rate & Stages
Saplings will grow quickly, being the hieght of an average maple by the end of the growing season, from there the tree's growth rate slows down. It can take hundreds of years for a tree to reach full maturity.
A well taken care of sky oak can live for millennia, but some sky oak can die from disease or poor environmental conditions, when this happens, the entire tree will turn a brownish color, and the leaves will fall from it. The vines that make up it's truink and branches will shrink and whither until they start braking off in small, thin pieces.
Ecology and Habitats
Sky oaks require a lot of sunlight and rain and temporate weather conditions. But more importantly they need mana and nutrient rich soil, which Aurora has in abundance.
Biological Cycle
Like most trees, they will lose their leaves during the winter, making it the brightest season of the year in the deep woods as the canopy is less obstructive. In the spring they will form pink blossoms that later fall off when the leaves grow in properly.
