Mimikiwi

The Poison Apple

Mimikiwi is a fruit bearing tree known for mimicking known fruits.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Mimikiwi trees appear to be a typical fruit bearing tree, but with often peculiar shaped trunks. The tree bears different types of fruit all visually similar to popular varieties such as apples, oranges, peaches, lemons, cherries, etc.   The fruit look nearly identical to their real counterparts but will usually have minor differences like being shaped slightly off or sometimes having weird green spots near the stem. The inside of the fruit is drastically different than its counter part, with all of them being green and slightly mushy on the inside and filled with very little yellow seeds. Its taste has been described as being super sugary with a bitter aftertaste.

Genetics and Reproduction

Mimikiwi seeds can not grown on their own in the soil. Instead, the must grow in the presence of warm, fresh blood. Mimikiwi appears to be common edible fruits in order to trick creatures into eating them. When the seeds enter their body, the creature will begin to transform into a tree. Specifically another Mimikiwi tree.

Growth Rate & Stages

When Mimikiwi is first consumed, its seeds are injested. Once reaching the stomach the seed will absorb into the body.   The creature may not experience any symptoms until several minutes later when a large tree branch will start to grow out of their head. This will go on for a while with more branches growing in the course of a day or so. At this stage treatment is easy, and simply removing the branches and giving the person medicine does the trick.   However if left untreated, symptoms will continue to progress. Fingers and toes will start growing bark and become difficult to move. The subject will also grow lalethargic and become very thirsty, but unable to eat solid foods.   Eventually the feet will root the subject in place, making them immobile. At this point the only treatment is amputation of the affected limbs. Bark will continue to grow over the skin and the legs will fuse together while the arms elongate and grow more offshoot branches. The insides will also eventually turn to wood, preventing movement entirely.   The final transformation leaves the subject immobile, blind and deaf. Its unknown if the subject remains conscious as a tree. Depending on the subjects initial size, the tree will continue to grow until it reaches the typical height of it's species, often dramatically warping the visage of it's previous form.

Ecology and Habitats

Mimikiwi trees tend to be found in the Aurora Forest, however they can start to grow just about anywhere, depending on where infected victims go before turning into a tree. It needs to be in a temperate location that gets plenty of rain, otherwise it will die.

Sounds like a nightmare if you aren't treated quickly. How do cultures near the aurora forest see the trees, are they evil to them, or just an aspect of life? Question aside, I love the idea behind carnivorous trees.

The early onset symptoms are so easy to treat that the only threat is being lost on the forest while poisoned, or being miles away from a clinic. It's treated more as an annoyance as it's kinda painful to remove the branches. It's a common ailment to deal with with foreigners to the point it's almost a running joke.
