Enondish Empire
The Enondish Empire was founded approximately 2500 years ago, and dominated the The Inner Seas region for most of its 800 year existence.
Structure
During the height of the Empire, supreme power rested in the person(s) of one (or more) Emperors (who were almost as likely to be women as men), supported by the Governor Generals of each province. The Imperial collage (when there was more than one Emperor), variously cooperated and fought with each other, often resulting in civil war.
During the pre-empire period, supreme power rested in a King, elected by a League of Representatives. During various points in history, this election was more or less theoretical, depending on the relative political and military strength of the various challengers for the title.
History
The Empire grew organically from humble beginnings as the City of Enond, on the shores of the Inner Sea. What started out as a tradition of defending their land from all claimants became a government so intertwined with the military that they were one and the same.
The city-state assimilated its neighbors in a series of more-or-less voluntary annexations (depending on the neighbor, their attitude, and the resources that the city "needed" at the time). Eventually, this became the policy of the Empire: annex peacefully if the neighbor was willing, conquer by force if there was a reason (or a pretext) to do so.
Territories
At its furthest extent the empire controlled the area from Haska Bay in the north to the west coast of the Matwa Sea in the south, including some of the eastern islands in that sea. In the west, the traditional border Enond is the Suena river, and the empire stretched from there across the Atwaun mountains to cover the coast.
Military
Aggressively expansive, the forces of Enond dominated the eastern half of the continent. At the height of the empire, the professional soldier was seen as both an honorable profession in its own right, and a good way to gain rank in the inextricably linked civilian government.
The forces of Enond had a reputation for military discipline that made them the terror of their neighbors.
