Bheur Island

Bheur Island (sometimes referred to by the derogatory title of "Mongrel Island") is a landmass on the northeastern edge of Dinma separated from the mainland by Breaker River. It's well-known for its populace primarily consisting of Mongrelfolk; the Half-Khasmalian, Half-Hominid mixed race of people.   The island served as a sort of haven for the Hominids of Valentia who were still loyal to the east during The Valentian Civil War. Many of these people had spouses who were Khasmalian, and children who were mongrelfolk. After the end of the war, most of the Hominids on the mainland were branded war criminals or - at best - socially pressured into leaving the country. Bheur Island remains one of the few places where Hominids have said they feel welcome in Dinma.

Travel

While there are no formal roads to speak of, natural footpaths have developed over time, though they're often covered by leaves and various other kinds of foliage. This does, however, allow for travel that's more expedient than what you'd normally find on the mainland. Most natives will travel between tribes via axe beak or - on rare occasions - moorbounder.

Amenities

Bheur Island has a different kind of structure when it comes to the available amenities, primarily due to its general dismissiveness of formal currency. That's not to say there aren't places to spend money, but it does mean there's more likely a place to do trade.

Inns & Taverns

Due to the extreme lack of visitations the island receives, there aren't many traditional inns to speak of, but there is at least one pubhouse in each tribe. They're not much different from a regular house - aside from typically having a couple extra rooms - and serve as a temporary space for those who need it. These spaces won't ask for payment; they'll only ask that you clean the space and provide your own food and firewood.

Shops & Vendors

The folk of Bheur Island prefer to do business through the trade of goods and services, rather than standard currency. There are plenty of vendors that still accept coin, but it's more common to offer a bit of your own trade in exchange for someone else's. The economy here primarily runs off of the idea of looking out for one another, so everything you could hope to receive in a trade revolves around food, services, and crafts. There might be, at best, one small magic shop on the whole island.

Other Places

There are a few churches on the island dedicated to a few of The Forces, primarily revolving around Silvanus. There's also a handful of schools, two notable training centers, and a central plaza for public events and festivals. The island has a noticeably lacking guild presence and government buildings. It seems most of the natives don't particularly care for that kind of authority.

Demographics

Government

Bheur Island is managed by several tribe leaders who report to the current Chieftain. The laws aren't significantly different from that of Dinma's mainland, though some would say the smaller population makes them even looser. More than anything, the government aims to protect island natives from any outside aggression.

Defences

Bheur Island has a much heavier guard presence than other settlements its size. There are several patrols that regularly march the perimeter of the island, aside from the mountains to the north that prove too difficult to scale on foot. Though incomplete, some parts of the island are walled off.

Industry & Trade

Though the island is mostly self-sustaining, they still do a bit of trade with the mainland. Most of that trade revolves around the import of meat, wood, and crafting materials, since the island is limited in what they can harvest regularly without interfering with the ecosystem.   The island has two ports for docking ships, typically those which are part of a regular trade route with the mainland. Any time someone comes onto port, they're asked to provide ID if the manager doesn't recognize their vessel or faces. It's unusual for the island to receive visitors, so they make a point to keep track of irregular arrivals and report any suspicious persons to the local authorities.
