After his plans were revealed to the elders of the houses of knowledge, Rentrum fled the shining city of Aeon and went into hiding in the swamps of the Great Haexica.Hiding in the swamp, Rentrum would recruit followers and even grant a few trusted, blood rite powers. The power granted by Mr. Strahd would today be seen as similar to those used by the Merathylls. Rarely would the followers of Strahd engage in open battle, but when they did, they'd leave few to tell the tale. After a year, the authorities would use Rentrum's own family against him, trying to force him to surrender. When he didn't, both of his parents and both of his siblings were executed in the town square of Aeon.
It is after this insident, it is said that Rentrum changed his name to Strahd Von Zarovich. Taking his surname as his first name to encite the power of a rebelious symbol and "Von Zarovich" to honour his mother and sister.
