(Condition) Merchant's Plague
The Merchant's Plague was a sickness that swept Quisling in 490 AQ. The symptoms include rash, shakiness, blurry vision, difficulty breathing, numbness, memory problems and death. It primarily affected rich folk, bankers and merchants, thus getting its name.
The plague spread quickly across Quisling, infecting thousands and causing the death of hundreds. Unknown to the public, it was actually Hydrargyrum poisoning. This was the result of large amounts of tainted money being put into the economy by Beth's Advengerer.
The plague, associated with gold, was a major factor in Quisling adopting promissory notes for most transactions. With the removal of most of the gold, and the Hydrargyrum slowly being worn off the coins, the plague became less severe. To this day, across Farrah, a tainted coin will occasionally appear and sicken its owner. It has been years since anyone has died from the plague, but it will be many more before Farrah is truly free of the Merchant's Plague.
