(NPC) Samuel McCarthy
Samuel McCarthy (475 AQ - ) is a Farran cartographer and survivor.
McCarthy was born into a rich family. He attended good schools and studied under famed cartographer Sarah Harlan at Siena.
McCarthy's life was quiet and peaceful until he was approached by Anthony Darrow and recruited to a mission to the Atuk Islands. McCarthy's role in the mission was to draw a more detailed map of the island and record the safe course that the expedition took to some secret location at the centre of the island.
Unknown to McCarthy he was selected for the mission because he was cheaper and more expendable than Sarah Harlan.
In 496 AQ McCarthy embarked on his first adventure. Darrow's company sailed aboard the pirate vessel The Venture, paying the captain a large sum to take them to the dangerous waters of Atuk Island. The the pirate captain refused to take the group to shore the rest of the expedition kidnapped his daughter, Carla Denham, and together with McCarthy, went ashore.
Darrow took two of the expedition members and went inland, leaving McCarthy, Denham and a muscular brute called Vincent Garroth on the beach. After spending the night there and Darrow not returning Garroth ventured into the forest and also vanished. The next night The Venture came into a bay on the island to retrieve Denham. Denham and McCarthy watched as the ship was melted and sank into acidic algae, the crew being consumed along with the boat.
Making common cause, Denham and McCarthy began to skirt the island looking for any long abandoned ships or magical communication devices. They searched the island, scavenging food and running from plant monsters that stalked the forests. Unable to find any way off the island and resigned to the fact that the rest of their expedition had perished Denham and McCarthy found a safe corner of the island where the monsters did not roam. They built a shelter there and slowly gave up hope of a rescue.
McCathy and Denham lived together on Atuk Island for eight years until 506 AQ when the Dragon Chasers arrived on the island. The Dragon Chasers were on the island for another reason, but were aware of years old bounties for the safe return of McCarthy, Denham, and the others in the expedition. The Dragon Chasers informed the pair that Anthony Darrow and Jasin Natael of their expedition had both got off the island in 496 AQ, but had not returned for their allies.
The Dragon Chasers were also marooned on the Atuk Islands as their ship also was destroyed by the acidic algae. Together with McCarthy and Denham they constructed a vessel while living for 6 months on the Eastern Wing Island and sailed back to Farrah.
Denham and McCarthy confronted Darrow and then Natael separately, and did not forgive either, despite Natael having been the one to put out the bounties for their return.
The pair now live together in The Rok.
