Escus of Thral-Krus
Escus of Thral-Krus (? - ) is a halfling Lich born in an ancient period. The nature of Escus' youth and upbringing are long forgotten. What is known is that his society existed before the discovery of wizardry, when sorcery was the sole arcane magic and the domain of the Dragons.
Escus uncovered a leyline tied to the Necromatic school of magic and followed it to a portal. That lead him to an outer plane full of necromantic power. Escus absorbed the knowledge of the spirits in that place and, using his newfound skill, crafted a phylactery, became the world's first Lich.
Escus' society was on the island chain of Krus. He lived on the main island of Thral (known in modern times as Chixculub). Escus used his dark power to bring the curse of undeath to the world, quickly dominating his peaceful island chain. Escus formed an army of undead and built a grand floating palace on the intersection of leylines on Thral-Krus. For centuries Escus ruled there with unchallengable authority. Any who faced him were destroyed, and due to his Lichdom he never failed and grew weak with the passage of time.
Escus was assured of his eternal rule and invincibility. Then, Unos and Valnar came. The magical wards around Escus' island were undone in moments, and his immense undead armies drowned and swept away as the Dragons and Elves sank most of the Krus island chain beneath an angry sea.
Escus was captured by the Gods of his time, and brought before Valnar. He cursed his foe and demanded to know who his great enemy was. The cruel Valnar ignored the Lich, and ordered a binding ritual be tested on the undead abomination. Valnar was sucked into a Pelostire Rock on the hilt of Nemesis, the binding blade.
Within the Pelostire Rock Escus found himself unable to conjure new magic. A peaceful race called Suuta lived in the bubble plane, and Escus quickly bent them to his will. For a time Escus ruled unhappily over the Suuta, longing for the day he could revenge himself upon Valnar and Unos. Then, a new creature was captured in the Rock. It called itself the Vetala. A brief war ensued between the Vetala and Escus for dominion of the plane. When the Vetala discovered Escus would not remain dead it imprisoned him within a rock tomb.
For untold years Escus was left in darkness. Then, one fine day, the tomb opened. The Queen's Blade, trapped in the plane with him, had set him free. Escus learned that the Vetala had escaped the plane, and helped the Queen's Blade in uncovering the ritual to escape as well. Escus was betrayed by the Queen's Blade and left behind when they completed the ritual. He was left once again in the bubble plane with the Suuta. This time he had more company - a mercenary called Lucius Linebeck and a number of elusive earth elementals.
If Escus can capture all of these earth elementals he can perform the ritual himself and finally be free of Nemesis.
