The mountainous landscape to the north and the west of the continent holds sheer cliff faces and winding valleys. Hidden amongst this hard-to-traverse terrain lie the citadels that form the country of Torenrig.
Conclave
Their government consists of a conclave of dwarven clan leaders,
stamhoofden. This title is inherited, or in rare cases granted to a new family, among which it is usually the eldest willing member that takes a seat on the conclave. The head of this conclave, the
opperstamhoofd, is chosen among them. This involves a rigorous ritualistic process involving contests, debates, and combat.
Conflict
Torenrig is a region full of harsh inhospitable terrain, leaving the citadels quite far apart. This inevitably led to differences in opinions and traditions, which made them hard to unite. Grievances between clans led to strive between the citadels, territorial disputes, and a chain of uprisings and civil wars. Torenriggers still have a temperamental reputation because of this history.
Industry
Torenriggers had to find solutions to many problems other countries didn't have to face, such as (warfare and) transportation through rugged mountain terrain. There were plenty of rich mineral ore veins providing a wealth of (precious) metals. Whatever resources couldn't be found in the region itself, were obtained through trade with neighbouring countries. Especially after the
Fey Fall, development focussed on modes of transportation. Torenrig is where coal engines, steam engines, trains, cars, airballoons, zeppelins, and helicopters found their origins.
Common (sub)races
After
mountain dwarves, several other sentients have distinguishable settlements here, such as
gnomes, giantkin, and warforged. Warforged once served the dwarves in their many wars, but are now recognized as an autonomous sentient race. After all, they are capable of life and reproduction, albeit in a different manner than most lifeforms.
