The Draconic Races

Traits

Common features

Draconic races are very distinct from other sentients. Their skin is leathery with thick scales on pronounced places, such as the limbs, shoulders, back, and head. They have reptilian or draconic snouts with sharp uniform teeth and tails for balancing. Their hands have only four fingers instead of five. They reproduce by laying eggs instead of gestating in a womb.
Their coloration, height and weight varies greatly and will be described per subrace.

Subraces

There are three recognized draconic subraces common to the continent of Zurica, namely dragonborn, lizardfolk, and kobolds, that can easily be told apart from each other. These are their distinguishable traits:
Dragonborn
Draconic celestials once hatched the first dragonborn from altered dragon eggs. They have a blunt snout with broad jaws and brows. Their head are adorned with frills, crests, or horns, often depending on their heritage. Their tails are relatively short and stiff. They have a magical breath ability the other draconic races lack. Their scaly hide is a more mottled version of their draconic counterpart, and can be chromatic in colour, or metallic. There are likewise many different eye colours among dragonborn. Their height does not vary much, between 1.90 and 2 meters, and their weight ranges from 100 to 150 kilograms.
What sets dragonborn apart from other draconic sentients is their dedication to honor. They value those who are reliable and dutiful, and treat all living things with courtesy and respect. Cowardice and treachery are repulsive, no matter how small the consequences. Honesty and commitment are expected in any promis that is made. Likewise, consequences of bad actions or mistakes should be accepted without reluctance. Some dragonborn can become arrogant towards others they deem less honourable, and their high standards sometimes collide with more tolerant and carefree races.
Lizardfolk
These hail from a semi-aquatic origin, bred by green and black dragons from pre-existing lizards that were over generations infused with draconic magic. Their scales range from a dark green to brown colour, speckled gray, and their eyes are a bright yellow or green. Lizardfolk have long, muscular but non-prehensile tails, up to 1.20 meter in length. Most lizardfolk have a smooth head, but some have a bright red and/or yellow crest that can be erected for display. Lizardfolk gender is hard to distinguish for other sentients, except for a slight difference in voice. Even the crest is not gender-specific. They have a wider height range than dragonborn, from 1.80 to 2.10 meters, and are generally less stocky with a weight between 90 and 115 kg.
Lizardfolk are unique among the draconic sentients through their squandering lifestyle. They only busy themselves with obtaining wealth to immediately spend it on good food and fun times. Most have trouble saving money, causing them to live in poor housing conditions, and they are often involved with either dealing or using drugs. Another factor that creates a rift between them and other sentients, is that some families still ceremoniously cannibalize deceased relatives.
Kobolds
This subrace is much smaller than the others, between 60 and 75 centimeters in height and averaging at 18 kilograms. It is believed that red dragons created kobolds as an arms race against each other, before they became sentient and independent enough to strike out on their own. Their scaled skin is a uniform red, brown, or black, except for a lighter coloured band from the chin across the torso to the lower tail. Some kobolds have darker toned stripes or spots. Their eyes are a dull orange or red, with round pupils. Their toes and hands have long beige claws, and their snout is crocodilian. Different patterns of small white or tan horns can be found around their head and sometimes on their back.
Personality-wise, kobolds differ from other draconic sentients with their sociableness. Kobolds know they can barely measure up to the taller sentients one on one, so they thrive through strength in numbers and smarts. They dislike being alone and rarely stray far from their family members. They also have little sense for privacy and modesty, which might be uncomfortable for other sentients, but they do value cleanliness more than most do. Maintaining hygiene is an important part of their daily routine.

IAMI-periods

To equalize the life stages of all the races including very diverging lifespans, and ensure that they can be categorized correctly when it comes to rights, taxes, and healthcare, all ID cards also share their racial Infancy-Adolescence-Maturity-Index, or IAMI.
For dragonborn and lizardfolk, the life stage periods are:
Infancy: 0-3 years
Adolescence: 3-15 years
Maturity: 15+ years
Average lifespan: 80 years
For kobolds, the life stage periods are very different: Infancy: 0-1 years
Adolescence: 1-6 years
Maturity: 6+ years
Average lifespan: 60 years (although they can reach 120 if they are healthy and careful)

Culture

Although the draconic subraces are all very distinct both in appearance and personality, there are some features that all three of them share in their culture. These include the following.

Self-improvement and pride

Draconic sentients strive to be independent and self-sufficient. To achieve this, they work with dedication until their goals are met. This is a responsibility not only to themselves, but to others as well. As very self-conscious beings, they have a drive for prove themselves. Failure wounds them deeply, and they will do anything to rectify their mistakes and conquer their weaknesses. Showing negative emotions is uncommon, and asking for help even more rare. In bad situations, this strong sense of self-worth can lead to greed and selfishness. Also, if they feel insulted or unfairly judged, they can quickly lose their respect for authority.

Practicality

Anything they say or do, has a purpose. Their leisure time is spent in activities to train their bodies or minds. Sports are competitive in a way that there is always a clear individual winner instead of a team. Other passtimes are strategic games, solving puzzles and riddles, or crafting. Their literature is at the very least educational, and expression of art is always through functional objects, such as furniture or implements. Sometimes they take a long time solving problems because they are determined to find the best solution. At other times they take decisive actions rather than trying to compromise conflicting ideas. It can also make them seem cold and indifferent, not taking other people's emotions into account.

Ostentation

Much like dragons, draconic sentients have a passion for precious metals and gemstones. Many of them become experts in this trade, valuing rarity, intricate details, and fine craftsmanship. Embellishments are added to any household objects, the more expensive the better. Clothing should remain practical first and foremost, but is then embroidered or adorned with beads and gold or silver thread. Since draconic races use jewelry mostly for the purpose of displaying the status of a clan rather than an individual, it often involves lots of clan-specific symbolism and colours.

Naming conventions

Draconic names typically consist of a given name (which can also be composite), followed by two surnames: the father's first surname, and the mother's first surname. The name of the clan, a confederation of draconic families with a shared history (can be any of the subraces combined), is sometimes added at the end as a formality, or used as the only surname, so an individual can attribute their achievements to the entire clan for honour and reputation.
