Ferlausen
The World Abandoned
Once, they say, Ferlausen was a world full of magic. Powerful sorcerers flew through the skies, opening doors to other realms and teleporting across continents. Dark necromancers raised legions of undead, and cruel flesh-warpers spawned monsters and abominations to strike terror into the hearts of good folk. Clerics and champions called forth the power of the gods and rained fire upon the wicked. And even young children could learn the secrets of making magical lights to guide their paths or fix broken trinkets.
That all changed after the Arcane Cataclysm, over 3,000 years ago. The causes of the Cataclysm are shrouded in mystery, and few know the truth of the story. However, magic quickly began to leak from the world. Gods grew silent, speaking only in whispers and then, almost not at all. Some races, sustained via magic, died out entirely. Other races, such as the gith and aarakocra, used the last of their waning powers to escape to other realms of existence, where magic still flowed strong.
Yet the monsters and undead the flesh-warpers and necromancers had formed seemed only to grow in strength and number, and many of the ancient cities of the world were abandoned to the wild. Civilization retreated to the shores of continents, leaving the gaping interior to become trackless wilderness, filled only with abominations and those few brave enclaves that refused to leave their homes.
So they call Ferlausen the World Abandoned.
Now the average person lives their life without ever seeing a spell cast or a creature born of magic - unless they are one of the unlucky few whose communities are attacked by hideous monsters invading from the untamed wilds. The ancient towers of learning stand empty, and the doors between worlds remain locked shut.
But here and there, the extraordinary occurs. Some individuals find that magic still sings in their blood, or that the whispers of silent gods fill their brains. The portals between worlds may crack and tear, and this is when true heroes are born.
